  1. A quotation from Thoreau

Others, craven-hearted, said disparagingly, that “he threw his life away,” because he resisted the government. Which way have they thrown their lives, pray? — such as would praise a man for attacking singly an ordinary band of thieves or murderers.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) American philosopher and writer
Speech (1859-10-30), “A Plea for Captain John Brown,” Concord, Massachusetts

  9. I am loving the “Grave Matters” podcast that Nadine Cohen and Anthony Levin have been releasing via SBS Audio. It’s wonderful to hear Australian perspectives on death and dying, given a lot of death-positive/Good Death media is from the US and the UK.

Like a lot of things that examine death close-up, this podcast is life-affirming and often joyful. It covers a wide range of Australian experiences of death with tact and sensitivity.

Today’s episode is about Australian taphonomy! Chuck it in your ears.

  10. OK, #Medievodons, help me find my way in an area I know little about. What is the state of research into late medieval ideas about dying well? Is the ars moriendi still a useful notion? What is a good book or article I can read to orient myself and find helpful further reading?

Context: I’m trying to contextualize something someone in the mid 15th century wrote about his own forthcoming death. Some of the books he owned are germane to the larger matter but not directly to his own text.

Although most clinicians have come to perceive invasive life-sustaining treatments as overly aggressive at the end of life, some of the public and greater proportions of some socially disadvantaged groups have not. Drawing on 1,500+ hours of observation in [4 ICUs] and 69 interviews…
