  1. 🏝️🦎 #Madagascar separated from the supercontinent #Gondwana millions of years ago and developed as an isolated #environment.

The long geological separation allowed unique evolutionary paths for the majority of its native species. Today the #island supports over 100 species of #lemurs and thousands of #plants that exist nowhere else on #Earth.

  2. I had an amazing time taking my Dad for a lifetime experience to the #elbphilharmonie last Saturday experiencing #Gondwana Records' yearly concert. The Ancient Infinity Orchestra and Ambre Ciel put on an amazing performance, and Chip Wickham killed it.

I was amazed how crisp the drums sounded in the space, and nuances of Chip's alto flute caused goosebumps. A perfect evening.

PS. All three artists can be found on bandcamp. Start with Ambre Ciel; I'm going to see her again in Berlin on Friday.

  4. Corporate groundwater extraction from the World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest

"The rainforest dates back 50 million years and is linked to fossil flora that once grew in Patagonia and Antarctica."

The" "unmonitored and unregulated" commercial extraction or "water mining" at Springbrook National Park was having a "virtually unknown" impact on the sensitive ecosystem...The extraction of water from underground aquifers could threaten the region's ancient Gondwana rainforests, with regulation "urgently required".

  5. Fossil Fuels: "The cost of inaction will always outweigh the cost of action."

"One and a half million Australians are at risk from sea levels rising by 2050 unless climate change can be limited, Australia’s first national climate risk assessment has warned. "

"Heatwave deaths in Sydney, for example, would rise by more than 400 per cent under a 3C scenario, and would still double under 1.5C scenario."

  11. "The earliest unequivocal dinosaur fossils appear in the Carnian (∼230 Ma) of southern South America and Africa, leading most authors to propose southwestern Gondwana as the likely center of origin. [...] Our results suggest that the archosaur radiation also took place within low-latitude Gondwana following the end-Permian extinction before lineages dispersed across Pangaea [...]"

  12. A new twist in an old origin story: Earliest #dinosaurs may have emerged in the Amazon phys.org/news/2025-01-story-ea paper: cell.com/current-biology/fullt #paleoart by @markwitton

"the earliest dinosaurs likely emerged in a hot equatorial region in what was then the supercontinent #Gondwana—an area of land that encompasses the Amazon, Congo, & Sahara today... the may have been well adapted to hot, arid environments... #sauropods seemed to retain their preference, keeping to lower latitudes"

  13. #Fossil Discovery Rewrites Global #Dinosaur History sciencealert.com/fossil-discov paper: academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/ar

"Ahvaytum bahndooiveche is now the oldest-known dinosaur from #Laurasia, the Northern Hemisphere land mass of the late Paleozoic supercontinent #Pangea... That age places it in a similar time period to #dinosaurs of Pangea's Southern Hemisphere land mass, #Gondwana, which were thought to be the world's first by a long shot."

  14. This footprint is one of 24 dinosaur prints found on Victoria’s Bass Coast, proving dinosaurs once roamed polar environments! 🦕

The tracks were created by theropods and ornithopods about 125 million years ago during the early Cretaceous, when Australia and Antarctica were connected as part of the landmass Gondwana.

Dr. Miriam Slodownik: "This discovery offers rare insights into a time when global temperatures were much higher than today. #Tasmania was much closer to the South Pole, but the warm global #climate allowed lush forests to thrive in these regions."

  16. Australian biodiversity conservation and 'fighting the government.'

"A rare legal win for an ecologist over a violent confrontation with NSW loggers exposed years of intimidation from corporate forestry representatives and law enforcement ."

"In environmental science circles, state surveillance and persecution of an ecologist whose findings refute or debunk state land management practices surprises no one. Last year, the International Science Council, a body representing more than 250 organisations, summarised that “the findings of environmental scientists … have long triggered censorship, intimidation, harassment and even violence when these challenge economic interests, political agendas, or ideologies”. It reported that scientists “have been physically attacked, wrongfully detained, and killed for their research and advocacy … threats and attacks are widespread in virtually all fields examining human impact on the environment”.

"A 2021 joint university study of Australian environmental scientists found more than half employed in industry or government “are routinely constrained in communicating scientific evidence on threatened species, mining, logging and other threats to the environment”. In some cases, “scientists self-censor information for fear of damaging their careers, losing funding or being misrepresented in the media. In others, senior managers or ministers’ officers prevented researchers from speaking truthfully on scientific matters...In all logged states, time spent fighting the government has overtaken the fieldwork time of ecologists and forest researchers."
