#GoldRace The "declarations" (where teams deliberately forfeit their playoff eligibility in order to start accumulating gold points sooner) are necessary to make sure that the weakest teams still get the best picks, but you can restrict them in various ways if you like.

#GoldRace Fans will take the raw material of whatever happens to their team and turn it into stories, it's what fans do. Even if the teams don't change behaviour, when the good narratives are attached to /winning/ instead of to losing, that's a big win for fans broadly.

#GoldRace Obviously the exercise is a pretend one, and a big benefit of actually enacting gold drafting is that it would change how teams act. But the REAL benefit is that it would improve how much fans enjoy bad seasons /even if the teams do not change in any way/.

#GoldRace There aren't any teams that are already eliminated and there won't be for a while, but for the sake of having something to go on with, let's assume that Anaheim, San Jose, Chicago, Ottawa, Montreal, and Buffalo (the six teams below 5% to make) would switch now.

The nhl, and many other leagues, would be improved by adopting gold drafting, which makes the existing schedule more exciting, eliminates tanking discourse, and gives the best draft picks to the weakest teams, who need them the most. This is the 2023-2024 thread.
