Spain bans 'golden' investor visas for non-EU citizens in a bid to curb the housing crisis.

Spain this week stopped allowing non-EU citizens who make property investments access to residency visas, closing off a pathway to Spanish citizenship.

The government said it introduced the measure to help ease Spain’s housing shortage that could reach a deficit of 600,000 homes in 2025.

Today AirBnB is a catalyst for property speculators worldwide to suck up homes of the typical size needed by single people or couples looking for their first home. I strongly, strongly suspect that a large chunk of those buying golden visas to Europe have acquired their wealth through very unscrupulous means and, apart from having shit tons of money, really aren't the sort of people we want. In contrast, we do need young, healthy, smart people who want to work - even better if they bring skills.

Get Golden Visa, an international residency program, recorded a 37% drop in the number of inquiries from Americans for its Portugal programs in the first quarter, and a 18% drop for all expats, compared with the same period last year.

“People who enquired last winter about moving to Portugal have for the most part not followed through,” said David McNeill, founder of consulting company Expat Empire."
