  6. #Petition: There's a huge body of #evidence that proves #GMO technology is as safe as any other. This includes #GoldenRice, which passed #foodsafety assessments & is approved in many countries. It can address #vitaminA deficiency & save #children lives: act.weplanet.org/golden-rice-d #nutrition

  7. No #GMO crops with #nutrition benefits (such as #GoldenRice & Folate #Biofortified Rice) are commercialized. But #consumers are generally in favour of their introduction—which would generate large #health benefits at relatively low costs: doi.org/10.1017/9781316585269. #plantbreeding

  10. Despite #supplementation & fortification programs, #vitaminA deficiency remains high in poor & rural populations. Enriched "#GoldenRice" is a cost-effective additional strategy. #Consumers from rural #Bangladesh intend to purchase it: doi.org/10.1177/00307270241259 #nutrition #GMO #rice

  11. Lifesaving #GoldenRice is once again under fire from groups who deny the #science behind its safety and its potential to save millions of #children’s lives worldwide. Let policymakers know you support this lifesaving food: act.weplanet.org/defend-lifesa #DefendGoldenRice #nutrition

  12. Derweil, dank @greenpeace_de:

(The Guardian)

  13. #Greenpeace l'ha fatta grossa.

"Scientists have warned that a court decision to block the growing of the genetically modified (GM) crop #GoldenRice in the #Philippines could have catastrophic consequences. Tens of thousands of children could die in the wake of the ruling, they argue."

"Many scientists, however, say there is no evidence that Golden Rice is in any way dangerous. More to the point, they argue that it is a lifesaver."

    theguardian.com/environment/ar

  14. A more recent one, though still old: 2016.

At that time, argument was that anyway, #GoldenRice wasn't yet an available commodity but rather a symbol which allowed to promote #GMOs, making the "crime" of fighting it a purely theoretical issue.

Seems from #theGuardian's (#theObserver) papers the state of things is not any different now "the crop has yet to be grown commercially – thanks, in the main, to the green movement’s vociferous opposition to its cultivation"

    lemonde.fr/planete/article/201

  15. Wow. The Guardian/Observer has definitely turned a corner.

"When modified rice could save thousands of lives, it is wrong to oppose it"

Golden rice is a magic bullet in the minds of many , including the editors of today's Observer.
Greenpeace are under fire for what many believe is an irrational objection to GM crops. The people and farmers of the Philippines have every right to object to the introduction of GM in their communities. There are much healthier ways to improve Vitamin A deficiency in their community without the risks of unleashing GM into their seed stock.

  17. I can't believe kids are going to continue dying or going blind because Greenpeace cannot just admit they've been wrong about #GMOs (well alas yes I can believe but I'm trying to remain polite) theguardian.com/environment/ar #GoldenRice #GMO

  18. "A mix-up over bioengineered tomato seeds sparked fears about spread of GMO crops"

The mix up is that people want plants with improved traits and vitamins and anti-#GMO activists are keeping them from people.

Also: harming poor children who need #GoldenRice.

  22. @failedLyndonLaRouchite the arguments about #goldenRice are by no means over. …and I’m old enough to have moved from unthinking & naive enthusiasm for #Borlaug’s #GreenRevolution, to the realisation that in the context of food system resilience, nutrient poor, nitrogen demanding, high yielding hybrid cereals have been a disaster for feeding the world. #diversity & #agroecology based #regenerative #agriculture free of #FossilFuel dependence is the only hope for feeding future generations.

    @Benjamin

  24. @Sfwmson There are some similarities in the ideas but also some differences. For within-species hybridization multiple traits from both strains appear in the hybrid.

For GMO, it is usually a single trait that is extracted from one species which does not appear in any strain of the target species, and is inserted into the target, resulting in an organism that could not appear in nature in any reasonable human timespan through hybridization alone.

An example is golden rice, which is rice that had bacterial and daffodil genes inserted into rice DNA to resulting in rice that produces vitamin A (beta-carotene).

  25. #Farmers in the Philippines cultivated #GoldenRice on a larger scale. It will now be distributed to women & children at risk of #vitaminA deficiency. This is the first instance of a humanitarian project using a #GMO crop to solve a major #health issue: ethz.ch/en/news-and-events/eth #ag

  26. The first crops of Golden Rice have been harvested in Philipines.

    ethz.ch/en/news-and-events/eth

It's an important achievement because this is beta carotene enriched GMO rice designed to prevent blindness in children in the countries where rice is the staple food and where beta carotene deficiency is prevalent.

  27. #GoldenRice:

  28. Ah, the #GoldenRice story. It is tragic in many ways--so many have suffered or died in the meantime.

But at least it's getting close to saving children now. I hope Potrykus gets to see that.

  29. Golden Rice’s Appearance On Philippine Store Shelves And The Rise Of Biofortification - After decades in development, the Philippines became the first country on July 21s... - hackaday.com/2021/08/18/golden #geneticengineering #biofortification #hackadaycolumns #goldenrice #science

  30. @inso
yes there is this argument. but I don't give it much value. It was also not part of the arguments I made.
Also: topic was original about #goldenrice. not about any GMO.

  31. Question about #goldenrice:

Can local farmers produce golden rice indipendently from dominant institutions that care the most about getting more market shares?

Does golden rice in its current state has more human usable nutrition then a sweet potato?
