Ever had a late-night conversation about alien life and what they might think of humanity? Travel back 45 years to a little-known time capsule called the Golden Record—built to show intelligent life in outer space what humans on Earth are all about.
-
At first glance the Golden Record looks like a shiny vinyl, but it’s a gold-plated copper disc filled with sounds, images and symbolic markings—centuries of human knowledge packaged as a time capsule to tell our story.
Earlier Pioneer probes carried metal plaques in 1972–73.

To grasp the vastness of space, Voyager 1 will pass near Gliese 445 in about 40,000 years. Yet even then, it will hardly have traveled across the galaxy. One full orbit of the Milky Way would require over 400 million years—an unimaginable timescale.

Crossing into interstellar space in 2012, Voyager 1 marked a milestone in exploration. Yet on a galactic scale, its motion is almost imperceptible. Even after drifting for a million years, it would remain within the Orion Spur, close to its origins.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is humanity’s farthest emissary, over 15 billion miles (24.8 billion km) from Earth, racing at 38,000 mph (17 km/s). It still carries the Golden Record, a time capsule of Earth’s culture, into the uncharted depths of the cosmos.

#Augsburg:
"

The #GoldenRecord was a message in a bottle. In 5 billion years it will be all that remains of the Earth.
"[It was] a message in a bottle that we were going to throw out into a giant cosmic ocean of the universe, to basically say 'this is who created this spacecraft, this is who we are, this is our place in the universe, and if you're there, learn about us, and maybe come and see us if you're curious like us'."

I love the unique things you can find on vinyl. Someone gifted me this Voyager Golden Record Box set a few years ago. I find it interesting what people decided to send in to space thinking that an alien life form may hear it someday. -
Found out about this sculpture via r/NASA today.

Good morning awesome people!!!! :) I hope your all having a good and wonderful day/night. I didn’t have the best sleep last night, oh well. I’m still ready for what the day may bring. Please know that your loved, and your so very much worth it. Always be kind to yourself and those around you.
Today we are going to talk about voyager one.
Did you know that Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object in space? It was launched in 1977 and has been exploring the outer solar system and beyond for over 46 years, as of today, September 5. It carries a golden record with sounds and images of Earth, a message of peace and curiosity to any alien civilization that might encounter it. Voyager 1 is now in interstellar space, where it continues to send back data about the cosmic environment. It is truly an amazing feat of engineering and science, a testament to our human spirit of exploration and discovery. #InterstellarSpace #GoldenRecord

In 1977, I sent a letter to #CarlSagan asking about the #Voyager #GoldenRecord. In 1983, I received this reply from Pearl #Druyan (Ann Druyan's mother).
