The fabric in the sleeve to the left would'nt survive the Laurel Handshake* since it _should_ be a brocade but isn't. However I have a hard time figuring out what it is. Thick print or fabric wide machine embroidery is my best guess. Being the barbarian I am I'd still pay a pretty penny for it!

General Mutu reminds me of Sarris in Galaxy Quest - the villain who was so evil he even had spikes on his eyepatch. Mutu's armor doesn't have spikes, but the decorations extends to his eyepatch _including the strap_. Opulence and leather, this can only be a villain!
And how large was the costume budget for this drama??? Look at the details on that thing! The costume maker deserves all the awards!

Dang, the embroideries on Ah Shu's skirt! I swear a costume designer sold their soul to be allowed to make them! Ignore the fact that an interior designer from Star Trek Enterprise zoomed by and put some random stuff on the table in the background, _look at those embroideries!!!_

A strong rule when designing characters for comics & animation is to make every individual have their personal silouette; the viewer should recognise them even if they're blacked out. Not easy to copy in live action, but the costume designer is doing a good job with Ah Shu, San An, and Si An. Not only are they colour coded and have individual collar lines, the shape of their hairstyles, sleeves, and skirt length gives them those unique silouettes.

Through the gossip around Word Of Honor I know this is a pretty big actor in China, and he certainly brings the A game*. But he also seem to be typecast as a father who makes weird arrangements around his daughter's marriage. I wonder if that ever was on his bingo card when he started acting school?

One of the C-drama tropes that feels unique to Asian dramas is 'hostile exam taking'. Will the two heroes settle their scores by meeting at dawn with bared blades? No! They'll ace their Geography tests instead!!!

If I ever go to Heng Dian World Studios the candle holders are probably safe - they won't fit my home unless I turn them into a permanent ~Christmas tree*. But that _shelving unit_ and the _manuscript box_ on the table! I'm ashamed to say I'd desperately try to look like an Old Lady In Need To Be Pampered to wiggle out if I can buy those set pieces after shooting is over, and probably annoy a director or two.
(*A good idea, come to think of it...)

Aaaaaand this is me, trying _very hard_ not to write a small academic paper on funeral decorations in C-drama. I've quit universitying! Honest!
(On a more serious note: seeing correct - or correctly adapted - funerary practices is another relief from Hollywood. Oh the ridiculous stuff I've seen!)

I admit being impressed by the actor playing Ma Zhiwen. He makes an _excellent_ 'face that needs to be punched' face.

I took this photo for my drawing practices, but I can't resist; candle lighter has to be a full time job at any C-drama mansion. That's a _massive_ amount of flames!

It's hard for me to pick a pic without spoilers at this point, but I just noticed the clever ways the main characters are given individuality despite wearing officials' uniform:
•Ji - always has his sleeves rolled up
•An Xiuyi - purple middle tunic
•Yuan Mo - no cap (that unrepentant rebel) and keeps his black moneybag in his belt
•Shen - red middle tunic (instead of black)
•Wang Kunwu - purple uniform despite belonging to the wine red crowd. -
Now I'm on romance overload. I like it as a spice to a story, not as the story itself (it's not bad, just not my vibe). If they don't find a crime to solve soon I'll strike double speed just for the fun of it.

This scene is an example of what I call "The Power of Many Episodes". It's used to convey a plot point, but mostly to show the characters have grown to enjoy each other. Since the plot point is unimportant the scene would've been cut from a Western drama that has to tell its story in 6 - 8 eps. A viewer of the latter would only get a dim idea of why the characters are ready to go to death for each other. Here you know exactly why.

Go East is pretty clever in weaving the clothes into the plot, and I love that fabric in itself is a theme through the drama. But there's not much embroideries 😢. So, while I know it's not the case, I still imagine a number of costume designers saying "Eff it!" and breaking into the embroidery machine room at night _specifically_ to decorate the top of Yuchi Hua's skirt.

Do you think they have a fabric and trim store for tourists at Heng Dian World Studios? I mean, Ah Shu's jacket is gorgeous, and that _trim_ on the sleeves!
