The film speaks to me on many levels. Among other things, it offers the most compelling, visually most congenial representation of the "photographer's eye".

Late 19th century, a young Danish priest comes to a remote part of Iceland. He is confronted with an imposing, beautiful and unwelcoming natural enivironment, and with deep cultural, political and personal conflicts. The narrative is slow and poetic, brutal at times, supported by intense visual imagery of the Icelandic landscape.

The priest carries with him a wooden large format camera, along with glass plates and the whole wet-plate processing equipment. The film's camera work lovingly reproduces the perspective of a photographer looking at the groundglass of their view-camera, using a 4:3 framing with the rounded corners of a typical ground glass. Magic.

Last night we watched the Danish movie Godland, set almost entirely in Iceland and with (sparse) dialogue in Danish and Icelandic. Over two hours of it.

It was beautiful. Dire. Scenic. Bleak. Amazing. Frustrating. Graphic (animal slaughter). Serene. Extremely weird in places.

Would I recommend it? Hard to say, I reckon many wouldn't have made it as far as the church building site before bailing.

Most of the movie has no dialogue, it documents the long drawn-out journey with truly astounding vistas. A good chunk of the dialogue is "I don't understand you" (said in Danish) as the priest doesn't speak Icelandic. There is an interpreter for some part of the journey, but, well, he departs at some point.

The movie is an artwork, made to look like it was filmed in Super 8 (i.e. 4x3 aspect). It needs to be treated as art rather than a story, for much of it at least. On that basis, it is truly worth the time spent watching it.

Την είδα πριν καμιά εβδομάδα και την προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα ειδικά αν ψάχνετε ταινία με αριστουργηματική φωτογραφία.

🇩🇰🇮🇸 Στο τέλος του 19ου αιώνα, ένας νεαρός Δανός ιερέας ταξιδεύει σε μια απομακρυσμένη περιοχή της Ισλανδίας (μέρος τότε της Δανίας) με στόχο να χτίσει μια εκκλησία, αλλά και να απαθανατίσει φωτογραφικά τους κατοίκους της για πρώτη φορά.
Ωστόσο, όσο προχωράει μέσα στο δύσβατο, αφιλόξενο τοπίο, τόσο απομακρύνεται από τον σκοπό του, την αποστολή του και τις βεβαιότητες που ως τότε ακολουθούσε.
