  1. George Barrell Cheever, a Congregationalist & Presbyterian minster, argues against slavery. God has uniformly spoken against oppression (Malachi 3:5, Ps 119:134). The claim of property in people is the sum of all these oppressions.

Today, some try to rehabilitate the reputation of slavery, to forbid teaching its history.

How can you protect the stranger, fatherless, widows, the servant, and hireling? Any one particularly at risk today?

  2. Thomas Watson, English Puritan, teaches on good works. Some flip out with “jealousy” when works are stressed, acting as if this were mere Catholic doctrine. But should we teach Jesus’ words, or fear men?

I’ve got those bruises, talking in conservative Lutheran circles.

How can you speak the truth as it is in Jesus?

  3. God is Love.
    Period.
    No terms and conditions.
    Just Love.
    Let that Gospel radicalize you.

For many, the idea of being radicalized by the Gospel is a foreign concept, so let me put it plainly. It means God didn't call you to sit in a pew. God called you to be Love in this world. To be his hands that heal, his feet that walk among the poor and dispossessed, his eyes that watch over every sparrow, every person whose pain goes overlooked. It means standing with striking workers, it means feeding the poor, clothing the homeless, providing sanctuary to those who flee oppression. Being a Christian is not about reciting Bible verses, it's about making a difference to people in need.

But if you need a Bible verse,
"Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other." Mark 9:49-50.

    Now go light your world.

  4. Handley Carr Glyn Moule, Anglican bishop, says slavery could not survive alongside the religion of Jesus Christ. At the same time, it wasn’t job of religion to start a servile war.

Conservatives have insisted on the latter, and then built a case for the opposite of the former.

Does Moule dismiss case that Church should have done more? My point is that the proclamation has always been there. That is what this blog is here to celebrate.

  6. Albert Barnes, Presbyterian bible commentator, on Matthew 5:42. Do not turn away an orphan, widow, or sick person, neither a friend that wants to borrow.

Today, do we dream up better and better reasons to deny aid to those that might knock on our door, or, to use the state to keep them as far as possible from our neighborhood and even in out of our country.

How can you respond more generously to the person of misfortune?

  7. So @joyannreid is having the conversation (tonight w/ Bishop William Barber) we need to be taking up at a national level - that American Christian Nationalism is devoid of empathy, cast adrift from the principles of #Matthew25 , bearing little resemblance to the core of #Christian values. #GodisLove #GodisDiversity #joyreid #episcopal

  8. From my favorite passage of #Shakespeare - I heard Harriet Walter read it the day of Trump’s inaugural:
Whet their detested knives against your throats,
Spurn you like dogs, and like as if that God
Owed not nor made not you, not that the elements
Were not all appropriate to your comforts,
But charter’d unto them? What would you think
To be us’d thus? This is the strangers’ case
    And this your mountainish inhumanity.
