CW: Godfather (novel) thoughts / spoilers
I'm nearing the end of The Godfather and there are a few more details that explain why decisions are made. They make a little more sense in the book than they do in the film, but I don't think these details are necessarily easy things to translate into film.
One thing that disappointed me was the back story of Don Corleone. The part where he builds up his mafia empire is quite fascinating but it is written in brief generalised story telling rather than going into a lot of detail.
I suppose it could be an entire novel to itself but I really wanted to read more about how he built his empire. I'd love to read this.
Other things that don't come across well in the movie are things like the war that happens when Sonny takes charge. This is also written in general terms but you get more of a sense of an actual war that I don't think the film does too well.
Michael's trip to Scilly is interesting. The woman/girl he marries I always found a little bit pointless in the movie except that he's kind of dishonest with Kay.
But the book give more information that makes it more important. It's written in slightly creepy predator language and I don't know if that's supposed to be Michael's character or it's just Puzo's penchant.
