I started playing #Go with a group in Oakland on Sundays. I am pretty rusty having stopped playing about 3 years ago when I was really sick, and I was never very good to be honest. But now I have a handful of stronger players to learn from and a structured curriculum to study thanks to the group organizer.
Today was my second week and I met more people this week who were at the #GoCongress in the Midwest.

Another game, another way to lose. Managed to fritter away a 20-point advantage to lose by 2.5 points. Had a good attack going, played at A to contain his weak group, could have played at B or C to kill, so didn’t get quite enough out of the attack. Still had a chance to do that a few moves later. Better luck next year. (Was always going to leave a day early, but the Covid incidents make that less regrettable.)

Correctly judged that my opponent’s ko threat at 156 would not kill my lower right corner, and ended the ko by capturing the four stones in the lower left. Yay me! Unfortunately, one misread later, my lower right corner died, and I resigned.
Stayed away from go (and stuffy lecture rooms) and went to Brandywine Falls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the afternoon.

Would have loved to feel overly cautious after wearing a mask at the Go Congress all week. Alas, two confirmed cases of Covid make that a smart decision, unfortunately. Wish my decisions on the board were equally solid – one win and two losses in the Die Hard tournament today.

Some scenes from today’s game. I’m playing black. (1) Happy to capture some stones in the top right. (2) Thought I could invade, aiming for a cut, but not easy to live. (3) Invasion failed, but managed to get into the top left corner thanks to that cut. I played A (ko), should have played B. (4) Opponent resigns in byo-yomi, thinking the game is lost when it’s actually still very close.

In game 1 of the Go Congress this morning I could see no way to rescue the marked stones, and resigned. However, apparently I should have sacrificed those stones and sealed off a bunch of territory at the bottom, making the game very close.
(Also, that SmartGo One app needs better tools for creating images of positions and sequences to post.)
