  1. I needed a logo. Suggesting a tree and music. At first, I thought of a flute made from a branch with leaves on it. And then I thought that a resident of the tree would be nicer.
    1. Idea sketch on paper.
    2. A better drawing in #GnuIMP.
    3. Bézier curves drawing in #Inkscape.
    4. First version.

Then I changed it again (see profile) to include the name and to match the colors of the banner, which I’ll be using as a guide for the overall feel.
It’s probably not perfect, but I’ll make do with it.

So, I just discovered this Foreground Select tool ! It's pretty amazing.

I spent hours yesterday trying to use G'Mic filters combined with various layer masks to extract fg/remove bg, but it's very messy and my brain is very small.

This tool is great so far! And it's built-in.

  4. Anyone know how image background removal by 'ai' works?

I'm wondering if it's full-on theft-gen-ai or if it's some lesser sin? Perhaps standard machine learning?

Asking because fam member uses #Canva a lot and she uses that background-removal all the time.

(It takes me hours to do the same thing that canva does in ten seconds. Very depressing.)

Any word of such tools in floss?

(ETA, I know about the various manual methods already.)

  6. Working on some #poster designs to gather stories and information from workers who have lost jobs to #AI or are being forced to use it in the workplace. Incorporating some hauntingly beautiful art from @prahou who was helpful enough to point me at a few other pieces that might inspire more designs as well.

Edit: for anyone interested in using these designs, I've released them here:

  8. @samhenrigold love this feeling. I'm having it myself with a $200 secondhand #Pinebook Pro that I got to see what I could do with my intermediate Linux knowledge on a bare bones #ARM machine.

I've been running a tiling window manager, managing all of my homelab servers over SSH, using #GnuIMP just like I did on laptops from ~15 years ago to make wallpapers for my jailbroken #kindle

Not every machine needs to be able to do everything. Especially now with prices on the rise.

  10. Does anyone know where I could find the app download files (.MSI and AppImage) for the Glimpse Image Editor? I know the project was discontinued long ago, but I still use it from time to time, and I'd like to have access to it in the future in case I change OS or device.

  13. #FreeSoftwareAdvent

Free Software that I rely on. One per day, I guess.

    Day 2:

    Gnu Image Manipulation Program

Known as #GIMP or as #GnuIMP by those who don't like the other name.

This is my go-to tool for basic image processing of photos and images for publication. It's a pretty common workflow for me to crop and/or enhance photos in Gimp and then load the output into Inkscape for layout work.

Also, FWIW, I learned it before I learned Photoshop, which frankly seemed kind of like a backward step to me, particularly in the way that Photoshop filters never seemed to have any controls (at the time -- this was 25 years ago and I haven't used Photoshop since then).

Which fuels my general belief that terms like "more intuitive" or "more powerful" are mostly a function of what you are familiar with.

It's one of the earliest graphics creation software packages I learned on Linux, and so it's become so much second nature that I hardly think about it anymore.

These days I use it all the time to crop and rescale screen captures, so I've attached one of cropping a screencap of itself.

  15. We really need extra help and support this month

Aldercone's havin' a really rough month, about 1/2 of our collective is too ill to work, with new, interesting problems that make some of our work really difficult/impossible.

One way to help is giving to our chuffed campaign for heckimp/PIKA which for us will be basic survival money, but for you is a cool rebranded #GNUimp! chuffed.org/project/157315-fun

  16. Lots of folks have wanted at least a rebrand of GnuIMP & 2 years ago we decided to make just that! Y’all funded us creating a tool to rebrand gnu imp + a whole rebrand, called :PIKApp:

We’ve got a new fundraiser to update #heckImp to gnuImp 3.0 + package #PIKApp for Linux and Windows: chuffed.org/project/157315-fun

We’re excited to get started so boost this post and tell your friends!

  17. Hey we remembered to actually fully launch the chuffed campaign for heckimp and PIKA! :yay_cheer: chuffed.org/project/157315-fun

(it was in pre-launch before and only visible via the link)

Help us Aldercones stay housed and make this rebrand of gnuIMP for you!

And did you know our cute lil :PIKApp: has a name! It's Clover!

  20. Starting from version 3.1.2, the GNU Image Manipulation Program will have the option to respect the system color scheme on Linux, thanks to XDG Desktop Portal and @nielsdg's merge request that was used as a foundation. Every desktop that supports the Settings portal interface will be able to make use of that functionality.

  22. So I'm using GIMP 2.10 still...
and I'm running into this extremely weird bug now, where

if I select, copy/cut and paste a portion of an image, the image becomes corrupted.
If I do this in GIMP 3.x, the issue doesn't appear.

Two potential reasons: 1. the image was made with convert append, 2. something mucked up with GIMP 2.10 and or is my RAM/GPU dying ? lol

@GIMP I know it's an older version but curious if this is known issue with older versions of GIMP. Sorry to bug yall, thanks :)

  25. Holes in Time

This is the first of my favorite design ...the many paint schemes worn by the same aircraft over its lifetime. In this case, Douglas Aircraft serial number 2145 was built in 1939 and continues to fly today, so she's a ripe 85 years old.

  26. Pond's Navy

When collector Robert Pond acquired MSN 2145 in 1989, he had her painted to resemble the scheme applied to U.S. Navy aircraft during the beginning of World War II. Her nickname, "Miss Angela" honors his granddaughter (and was later applied to a Boeing B-17).

  27. Boss Bird Mark II

For reasons by owner John David Tinsley (of Tinsley's Chicken 'n rolls fame), he had MSN 2145 reregistered and her paint scheme altered, mainly replacing the tail logo upon the tail.

  28. Maximized Chicken Monger

Douglas MSN 2145's twelfth owner was John David Tinsley of Huntsville, Texas. He had her painted as the unique Boss Bird to promote his 50+ restaurants known as "Tinsley's Chicken 'n rolls".

  29. Building a Legacy

This is the second of nine members planned for the upcoming "Legacy of Liveries #1: Manufacturer's Serial Number 2145" group composition. This design targets a single aircraft and depicts the different paint schemes worn by it over time.

  30. Your Out of Order!

The next, quickest, fleet to be produced are a batch of 19 employed by airlines during the 1950s and 1960s. DC-3 fans love the unique and colorful styles of paint applied during this time period. Some company names are long gone, some merged, and some are still around.

I'm still not selling anything yet, as I work out the nuances of taxes and shipping.

  31. PIKApp / Heckimp Status

Heckimp is a tool for creating and maintaining forks of the Gnu Image Manipulation Program.

:PIKApp: PIKApp is our fork of GnuImp created with HeckImp.

    Status:
    - We have working PIKApp builds on Linux from 10 mos ago that we use, they work pretty good.
    - Heckimp needs to be updated for latest changes in upstream.
    - We can share our builds and help build other forks.

  33. The other Maximizer: Northeast Airlines N44992 circa 1964

Northeast Airlines' Ship Number 92 was a DC-3A converted from a former USAAF C-53 built in 1943. Northeast was her third owner, after United Airlines sold her to them in 1953.

  34. To the Max: Air France F-BEIY circa 1963

Working to complete the next Fleet of Fancy, the last two members needed the aforementioned speed kit parts, but in the "Maximizer" variety. Air France was a fan of this modification and applied it to many in their fleet.

  35. While waiting for additional art supplies, I embarked on creating additional parts for the 3D model. Many Douglas DC-3's were modified with "speed kits" to improve their performance, with the most significant improvement realized with the addition of doors to cover the semi-exposed wheels. The image shows how the "Maximizer" brand doors look in the their opened position.

    #GnuIMP #blender3d #blender3dart #python

  36. The image compares the before and after of a typical cargo door. I just finished updating the fourth of 67 ...so it's going to take a while to complete this sweep. Totally worth the trouble and time to make the replicas even better!

  37. I need to reclaim my agency on Mastodon. It is my intent to move away from mastodon.art as we are not a good match. I've enjoyed sharing my art, roses, and projects here, but there is friction. It is clear I cannot be my true self here without overstepping boundaries.

I fully support the owners of mastodon.art in setting their own rules, but I'm sad about the collateral damage.

I've written an essay about how the tag #GnuIMP punctured my self worth.

    twobraids.com/2023/07/reclaimi

  38. That's a difficult one as it stands. #GnuIMP isn't really a thing so it will be hard for people to follow me when I use the software. It would be a little easier if our replacement word rolled off the tongue a little. Have to put some thought into how I can still connect to those users, even now I'm tempted to put the proper hashtag. #opensource
