Hype for the Future 159/284 → List of Supported Operating Systems in GNOME Boxes
Overview Within the context of GNOME Boxes, an official catalog of available supported operating systems and even associated icons is available for the application and context. Such icons may vary by system version and other factors; however, the most common operating systems for the GNOME Boxes application are often intended to be listed first. List of Operating Systems in Gnome Boxes The following list of supported operating systems in GNOME Boxes assumes a host running Ubuntu 24.04.2 […] -
upgraded to #Debian #Trixie today.
Did not check if #VirualBox is compatible yet.
Now using #GnomeBoxes
Having headaches for the rest of the day

Oh holy heaven, gnome-boxes supports file transfer into a VM by drag and drop.
-
In case this piece of knowledge is useful to someone: if you install a guest OS in #GNOMEBoxes while the host computer's network is disabled (to dodge Windows' stupid SaaS-style "online accounts as system accounts" enshittification push, for example), there is a bug where GNOME Boxes will not be able to automatically set up the virtual bridge for the guest OS to be reachable from your LAN/host via the network: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-boxes/-/issues/1122
-
Man, I can't get over how much better #GnomeBoxes is than #VirtualBox. It's bonkers.
I'm flabbergasted by it!
-
#GNOMEBoxes doesn't see symlinked ISOs:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-boxes/-/issues/1085
Not ideal for tracking your installation image files with :gitannex: #gitAnnex...
EDIT: Fail... 🤦 Turns out the ISOs were 'git annex drop'ped, so the symlinks were broken and it makes sense that Gnome Boxes didn't list them.

Wow, drag & dropping files between Nautilus and #GNOMEBoxes just works?! This is so cool 🤯
Makes it quite convenient to use #virtualization on #Linux for the one or two times per year where you might need to test something on Windows with some esoteric file. -
Not holding my breath there, but in case #sysprof performance profiling data can provide new insights to allow optimizing #GNOMEBoxes / #QEMU / Spice guest tools / #virtio graphics to provide faster Windows #virtualization on #Linux without VirtualBox, here is a fresh bug report on window dragging performance specifically: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-boxes/-/issues/1083
Also profiled the suspicious constant CPU usage while idle: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-boxes/-/issues/676#note_2074349

It's a tiny bit annoying to share files between a linux host to a windows guest.
Right now, I have a firewall-protected samba server that can only be connected to from my VM to share files but I don't love this. When I tried webdav sharing via spice, though, the performance was too slow and a bit annoying to work around.
I'm almost tempted to just use syncthing and forget about the file redundancy. Thoughts fediverse? #technology #vm #gnome #gnomeboxes #virtualmachine

My development environment for now:
1. Mac (with macOS) + Microsoft Remote Desktop, using Tailscale for easy access to:
2. Linux PC running @UniversalBlue Bazzite, effectively working full-time as a VM host for:
3. GNOME Boxes (@gnomeboxes), with development-ready @xubuntu 24.04 and testing daily builds of 24.04 minimal and desktop ISOsEverything works together so nicely and makes working from anywhere convenient and easy.

In case you've tried using @xubuntu with @gnomeboxes or
virt-manager and experienced random crashes during startup or mid-session, removing the libva-wayland2 package seems to stop the crashing entirely for me.Command line:
sudo apt remove libva-wayland2Related bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1861609 -
So installing #virt-manager unlocks bridge mode in #Gnomeboxes on #Fedora . Nice
