Thanks to the AD&D DM’s Guide, I know that 16 gnomes can work at once on a ten foot wide tunnel through hard rock and can excavate 480 cubic feet in an 8 hour shift.
I won’t count how many times this has come up in my games.

Today I heard another take of the old classic of someone who want to roll some social skill to make another PC do what they want, instead of talking it out.
If you succeed at your roll, you get to ask the other player "what could I say that would make you responsive to my suggestion". That player is supposed to answer in good faith. It could still mean, you don't get what you want.
Today I heard the idea of offering XP or metacurrency to take the suggstion. Hmm.

GM Note for Echoes of Invasion:
The players really enjoyed the festival early in our campaign, so I gave them a chance to experience another. Inspiration came from a lot of places. For one, Pupsi has Youtube videos where he carves vegetables into ocarinas and then plays pop music. Another inspiration was a renn faire with a melon catapult. The pitchfork competition was based on sand shoveling at another fair and that the #BattleForWesnoth Peasant unit has a ranged pitchfork attack.#GMTips
