Thanks to the AD&D DM’s Guide, I know that 16 gnomes can work at once on a ten foot wide tunnel through hard rock and can excavate 480 cubic feet in an 8 hour shift.
I won’t count how many times this has come up in my games.

Speaking of GM advice, I do recommend jim’s book on the subject.
Even if you have decades of experience it’ll give you things to think about.
I need to bug him about making a PoD version available.

@alice This doesn't fit into a pithy toot but I really enjoyed Return of The Lazy Dungeonmaster by @slyflourish . It packs a ton of useful advice for high-ROI prep into a slim volume I found more useful than the D&D 5e DM's guide. My GM tip is read/watch it if you haven't already.

When to Fudge or Cheat while running an RPG.
As the author states
"Our job isn't to ensure a rigid interpretation of the rules. Our job is to facilitate a fun game."
And there are plenty of ways other than dice rolls to nudge your game table.

Today I heard another take of the old classic of someone who want to roll some social skill to make another PC do what they want, instead of talking it out.
If you succeed at your roll, you get to ask the other player "what could I say that would make you responsive to my suggestion". That player is supposed to answer in good faith. It could still mean, you don't get what you want.
Today I heard the idea of offering XP or metacurrency to take the suggstion. Hmm.
