@shadows It’s strange indeed. We all know how quickly AI can generate not only simple outputs but also entire sentences or paragraphs that set the mood, connect all the dots, and so on. For instance, many players can no longer create their character backgrounds without the help of AI, which is quite problematic.

@nikink @shadows Yeah, I do the same. What people don’t realize is that when we create our random tables, we’re already immersing ourselves in the adventure or campaign. It’s not just random outputs; it’s world-building.

I saw this post on Bluesky, and I kind of miss this era. I know Random Tables are not new to RPGs at all, but they have their appeal. AI can make prep faster than before, but it also loses something in translation, if you know what I mean.

I need some interesting magic items to give my group. I must admit, Nimble’s sample magic items are very few and not the best.

My group is headed to Imperial Hill next session, named for the old fort on the hill when this was the old border of the empire hundreds of years ago.

What are some interesting places to see there? Fun facts? Signature produce?

It does sit in the middle of Marsanne wine country.

Ich glaub ich hab soeben kapiert, welcher Anwendungsfall bei mir das Bedürfnis auslöst, Encounter zu würfeln: Nämlich wenn ich neue Spielies mit neuen Charakteren habe, weder Menschen noch Figuren gut kenne, und mich darauf vorbereiten will, dass ETWAS passiert. Ob ich auf der Tabelle dann würfle oder wähle, weiss ich noch nicht. Aber so eine Tabelle schafft einfach die Sicherheit, dass irgendwo irgendwas sowieso passieren wird!

Ich bin ein so grosser Fan der AD&D 2nd Psioniker und... habe das verpasst, übersehen irgendwie.🫣

Habe jetzt einen Amethyst-Kobolden als Mystic Stufe 4 im DungeonMastersVault erstellt. Und will mehr. Mich da richtig einfuchsen und einen 2ten Plot für den stream am Start haben bis zum 24. Januar. 💎 Und einen Amethyst-Drachen vielleicht auch.

2 Inner Gate
The inner gate used to be barred, but the fastener rusted and the goblins haven’t repaired it. It’s heavy enough to take an action to open. If the goblins are alert and manning the murder holes, any character between the two gates takes 1d4 damage from dropped rocks, shivs, and other garbage after their turn. Plus the goblins in the guard posts could fire arrows through the slits.

I like the idea that they don’t use the underground sections, but dump their garbage and occasional prisoners down the trapdoor to feed some giant spiders that live down there.

Noble Families Project

I’ve managed to make a successful import file.

Now to figure out how to use Gramps, but I’ve got plenty of data to play with.

I did see a minor family named governor, so I’ll have to sort that out. But gramps I’m exporting the birth last name, I should probably add married name to the notes field.

I should note my generator is very queer.

When I generate a random spouse, I don’t reference the marrying partner’s gender.

As long as at least one partner is not cis male I let them have children.

Gender is a d12
1-4 cis male
5 trans male
6-9 cis female
10 trans female
11 fluid
12 non-binary

Thinking about scripting a program to generate family members for my six noble families. Probably adapting some Pendragon tables to start a few hundred years back and randomly determine births, deaths, marriages, etc.

Will need a suitable pool of minor house names and first names.

Will be interesting to see what I end up with.

One of the best dice mechanics from Traveller 5 is the “flux” roll. You take 2d6, but subtract the second die with the first one, giving you a result from -5 to 5, but most likely 0.

I have 6 noble families for my Outlaws of the North game. To decide their initial relations with each other I rolled flux for each pair. -5 means mortal enemies, +5 means strong alliance. 0 is neutral.

Apparently nobody likes Kalem.

Since my Outlaws of the North map is based on the PNW, I keep renaming cities vaguely inspired by the actual location.

So I have this little fishing village where Aberdeen is. The small town in WA, not its more famous Scottish cousin.

It is where Kurt Cobain was from, so I’m tempted to just call it Nirvana. Is that too obvious? Anyone think of something related but cleverly obscure to use instead?

In thinking about my next campaign, I feel like I should just read the first part of each of the many Pathfinder adventure paths I own and raid them for parts.

I’m never going to run any of them, but I could use an abandoned monastery from Legacy of Fire or a heist from Second Darkness.
