"Brevican (BCAN) ... and growth differentiation factor 15 ... showed the most significant, and multiple, associations with dementia, stroke and movement functions."
    nature.com/articles/s43587-024

"Brevican is a secreted member of the lectican/hyalectan family of hyaluronan-binding chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs; (Faissner et al., 2010)). Mediated by binding of homologous C-type lectin motifs in the C-terminal domain, brevican comprises a structural factor of the ECM together with tenascins and hyalurolan (Bekku et al., 2009). It is predominantly present in perineuronal nets (PNNs) of the adult CNS and is transiently expressed by neurons during development."

  15. watched this yesterday:

A conversation with Alison Hanson on cognitive science and her trajectory in neurobiology. --
    Michael Levin's Academic Content

    youtu.be/bZPhqwrSC24?si=j7Zctv

    Very interesting.

Dr Hanson mentions Stuart Lindsay's work on electrical conductivity of proteins:
    news.asu.edu/20220225-live-wir

I started thinking again about proton conductivity of glycosaminoglycans, e.g., keratan sulfate. I did a lit search for new articles and found -

Keratan sulfate, an electrosensory neurosentient bioresponsive cell instructive glycosaminoglycan
    doi.org/10.1093/glycob/cwae014

can't wait to read it but I have so much work to do around the house, esp. after having a migraine.

  17. Someone on YouTube comments asked me what I thought was in cucurbits (squash/melon family veg) that I react to. I had mentioned previously that Corn Allergy Girl (author of now defunct blog of same name) also reacts to most cucurbits (except cucumber). Here's my response, in case anyone has any input:

" I wish I knew. I'm not even sure if the reaction is due to cross-reactivity with corn allergen or if it is due to mast cell activation syndrome. To complicate things further, Corn Allergy Girl has questioned whether corn allergy is due entirely to reaction with the corn protein zein or if people also react to carbohydrate epitopes (bits of the molecule that makes a pattern that is recognized by the immune system) and I think it might be a possibility. So the reaction to cucurbits might be due to cross-reactivity with a similar carbohydrate found in corn. Humans have antibodies to carbohydrate epitopes (called cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCD)), but they are not supposed to cause allergic reactions and allergy tests are designed to ignore these antibodies. I have wondered what would happen if something went wrong in whatever mechanisms the body uses to ignore CCD antibodies. According to one paper*, 'The role of CCDs and their specific IgE antibodies in the pathophysiology of allergic diseases is controversial. ' "

Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and BC Children’s Hospital show that the sugar sialic acid, which makes up part of the protective intestinal mucus layer, fuels disease-causing bacteria in the gut. 22. Does anyone have a good pointer to #glycobiology #bioinformatics resouce so I can prepare introduction for my students in #structuralbioinformatics class?

  23. @xtaldave hmm. I'm not much of a #Glycobiology person, but maybe we'd want to hide something from the #ImmuneSystem ourselves some day? Good to know how, right?
