The final session of Day 2 of #biocuration2025 is on glycans. Kiyoko Aoki-Kinoshita explains that the name for GlyTouCan (https://glytoucan.org) is a play on words in Japanese, where "Tou" means sugar!

It is the prerogative of the young to ignore the humble efforts of the old. Nevertheless, I can feel a slight sting: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41592-024-02314-6 vs. https://doi.org/10.1109/TCBB.2010.129
Turns out, I made a complete chapter out of that, in my "will-be-finished-soon-or-possibly-never" "textbook", https://bio.informatik.uni-jena.de/textbook-algoms/. Sigh... Their program name is dope, though. #glycans #massspectrometry -
A single #mutation in dairy #cow-associated #H5N1 viruses increases #receptor #binding breadth, BioRxIV: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.06.22.600211v1
We found that H5 from A/Texas/37/2024, an isolate from the dairy cow #outbreak, has increased binding breadth to #glycans bearing terminal a2,3 sialic acids, the avian receptor, compared to historical and recent 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses. We did not observe any binding to a2,6 sialic acids, the receptor used by human seasonal influenza viruses.

"These dynamic #proteins indicate a variety of binding capabilities, and we confirm that one mosaic adhesive trimer (MAT) member shows specificity for surface #glycans from a particular prey. Our study shows that the B. #bacteriovorus MAT protein repertoire enables a broad means for the recognition and handling of diverse prey epitopes encountered during #bacterial #predation and invasion."

The role of glycans, the sugars that cover our cells, in Alzheimer's disease is being studied. Glycans may have the ability to regulate the aggregation and toxicity of amyloid-beta, the protein responsible for forming plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Targeting glycans could be a possible strategy for preventing or treating the disease, but further research is needed to confirm this. #glycans #alzheimers #sugar https://neurosciencenews.com/glycans-alzheimers-23027/

.@Elisa and other #glycans researchers .. I was working on the @AvogadroChem common molecule fragments and realized it didn't have any common furanoses. Are there any repositories of common monosaccharides?

A new study has discovered that glycans, a type of sugar molecule, play a key role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Glycans are found on the surface of cells and can affect their interactions and functions. The study found that glycans can modulate the aggregation and toxicity of amyloid-beta, a protein that forms plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
