The U.S. is poised to resume shipments to Ukraine of long-range bombs known as Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB), after they were upgraded to better counter Russian jamming. The #GLSDB's have a range of around 100 miles or 160km.

David Axe points out that Ukraine is using #glsdb on modified Ukrainian MiGs, giving them a somewhat less powerful but more accurate glide bomb, usable on - let's face it - their most common, most expendable jets.
Axe says "no one outside the Pentagon and Ukrainian air force knew the Ukrainians had the... SDBs".
Not quite. I mentioned them on Jan. 31st, as #glsdb. And that they could easily be converted back to SDBs, usable on F-16s... or, apparently, on the MiGs modded to launch US HAARMs.

Russian jamming has kept many of #Ukraine's relatively new long-range #GLSDB bombs from hitting their intended targets.
Ukraine over the last year sought weapons with longer ranges than the 43 miles (69 km) of #US-provided GMLRS rockets so #Kyiv could attack and disrupt Russian supply lines and muster points.
While #Boeing has said the weapon can defeat some jamming, one of the sources said it would take Boeing months to fix.

Just a little reminder that while the Kerch Bridge is not within range of the #glsdb , the actual ordinance of the glide bomb is the GBU-39, which is commonly fired from F-16s...
So, when the F-16s arrive, in the not way too distant future...
there's little doubt but that the Kerch Bridge is toast. Ukraine will be able to use the #glsdb to routinely target the coastal roads and rail, while F-16s take out the bridge AND the ferries. -

Apparently, while Boeing made huge amounts of the M26 rocket motor, the GBU-39 glide bomb only had 17,000 made thus far. But it has an old, plentiful air force bomb inside of it, presumably with many of the costs of production long since paid for, and is affordable at $40K/ea. compared to $110K #himars ordnance, with nearly twice the range.Smart, programmable navigation via anti-jamming GPS, or laser-guided.

So, what performance should we expect of Boeing's #glsdb using #himars?
We have video of the rockets in action during the Gulf War, a decade before they were decommissioned.
Ground fired, 205 lb frag. warhead, 93 mile range, an accuracy of 1 meter, 12 rockets per launch. 640+ submunitions / rocket?!
Able to penetrate over 3 ft. of steel-reinforced concrete. (Or Iraqi / Russian tanks, for example...) Able to reach Taganrog, Mariupol, etc.
A cluster-like swath of devastation.

Two interesting things about this recent #Ukraine strike on #Crimea:
1) Claimed "ammunition warehouses" but no major secondary damage
2) Hits seem extremely precise, 2 munitions per warehouse (except one, miss/dud?). Target is ~130km from front line. Ukraine wouldn't burn 7+ Storm shadows on this, and holes seem small for that. Not consistent with ATACMS eitherHas #GLSDB finally arrived?

#Ukraine will need to wait until next year before it receives its first big shipment of rocket-propelled bombs the U.S. has adapted to strike at a nearly 100-mile (160km) range, according to the Pentagon and people familiar with the timing.
People familiar with current timing say delivery to the U.S. by #Boeing, the prime contractor for the #GLSDB, will take place in late December - followed by several months of testing before onward shipment to Ukraine.
