CW: NZ - Gloriavale school to close
It's taken far too long, but the Gloriavale school is finally being closed "amid concerns it was not a physically and emotionally safe space for students."
Assimilating the current 80 students into surrounding schools will be quite a challenge.

Just two days into the trial and Gloriavale's "Overseeing Shepherd" pleads guilty to indecent assault. He's admitted round half of the charges in return for other charges being dropped.

Gloriavale leader Howard Temple goes on trial in Greymouth today for sexual offending against girls over more than 20 years.
He's facing 14 charges of indecent assault and 13 charges of doing an indecent act. Most of the charges are representative, meaning they're just the tip of the iceberg.

'God bless' Winnie-the-Pooh: Gloriavale families cautioned against reading fairy tales, 'feminist propaganda'

Have watched the first episode of #EscapingUtopia - the doco about #Gloriavale and holy crap everyone in Aotearoa should see this. I had no idea. The show is really well done so far. While it is a heavy topic, it focuses a lot on the people helping others escape and seek justice, and that makes a difference.
CW for show: sexual, psychological, and spiritual abuse. It's about a controlling religious cult, so pretty much everything you'd expect from that.

The Employment Court has found that six former Gloriavale women were employees rather than volunteers. Most of them worked from age six and worked up to 90 hours a week.
That's a lot of back-pay.
This is a significant finding, especially for those still inside the cult. On the back of this decision, the Labour Inspectorate is likely to reopen their investigation into Gloriavale and consider enforcement action.

Honestly, #Gloriavale sounds like it just births people into slavery. How are we allowing their business to be tax free and then not to pay for their labour?! How can any other business compete with the operating model?! https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/128591968/childrens-work-not-chores-gloriavale-leavers-win-employment-court-case
