I’m going through my #GlobeandMail gift links at rapid pace today, but this piece by Doug Saunders makes a very important and rather neglected point: “ #Democratic #backsliding is measurably a product of low #education rates.” www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/24ca038... 🎁📎

Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪🇲🇩 @acoyne: "My latest, on Carney and the dangers of always being the “smartest guy in the room.” https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-mark-carney-might-be-used-to-being-the-smartest-guy-in-the-room-thats/ “So in Mr. Carney we have an unusual combination of attributes: extraordinary self-confidence, utter lack of political experience, and enormous power. Is it entirely surprising to find that his conduct in office reveals a certain, shall we say, authoritarian streak?”"

@PapyrusBrigade I'd say #MarkCarney is centre right, but I rarely read the #GlobeAndMail (also centre right, in my opinion).

Imagine being so devoid of any sense of duty to the country as a “paper of record” that you write:
“Canadians must acknowledge the real risk that Mr. Trump will use military coercion against our country.”
But leave the article behind a paywall, guaranteeing it is not seen by the majority of readers, let alone the majority of Canadians.

A timely article from the #GlobeAndMail, indicating the apparent early severity this flu season (with a prominent H3N2 variant component), the importance of vaccination now (since full effectiveness takes 2 weeks) before holiday family gatherings peak, and advice about other infection prevention mechanisms (wash hands, don’t touch your face, etc.).

"If you are detecting a pattern – contempt for the powers of Parliament, the rule of law, and the rights of the individual – you should know that the Carney government is hardly alone in this regard. Everywhere you look, you find fresh reminders of the decay of liberal democratic norms in this country."
Something is wrong with Canadian democracy

"Just because you call it capital spending, moreover, doesn’t mean it is; nor is all capital spending necessarily the kind that leads to higher economic growth and more government revenues. Experience suggests that little of what the government proposes to “invest” will pay these sorts of dividends.
What might? Tax reform, for one."3/3

"Whether you call it capital spending or operating spending, in other words, it still has to be paid for, one way or another. And total spending, capital and operating combined, has been put on a substantially higher track – yes, even from late Trudeauvian levels."2/3

I've read a lot of commentary about Ontario's anti-#TrumpTariff, #RonaldReagan advertising.
The most insightful comment I saw was in the #GlobeAndMail: this is how Pres. Trump negotiates. He was always going to give signs that a deal was close, then blow up the negotiations over something. These ads were a pretext; if it hadn't been the ads, it would be something else.
As for the ads themselves, I hope that when the White House crashes the economy, Rs will remember what they used to believe.

I confess to not understanding this matter. What I know about it is largely from listening to the #CBC #AtIssue panel's video last week. I think it's in reference to Mr. Trudeau's involvement with the SNC-Lavalin scandal, but in 2025, why would Mr. Poilievre be discussing that at all? Was this on his Twitter feed, in an interview? The #GlobeAndMail article is blocked by their paywall.
Pierre Poilievre’s casual accusation of an RCMP cover-up is stunning

:InDanger: However they also say:
R. A. Carlos recently reported on an alarming five-fold increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on the island of Guam from 2016 to 2022. He reviewed 95 studies and concluded that the increased trend paralleled the widespread exposure of young children to microplastics.
and the citation given is to the abstract of a conference presentation which ACTUALLY says the author reviewed 95 studies for "neurotoxic effects of microplastics on other species, including fish, mice, mollusks, nematodes, crustaceans and chicken" not to find fricken autistic crustaceans but to find neurotoxicity.
But autism definitely isn't neurotoxicity in general, and probably isn't in any specific way.
So what we're left with is an observation of 5x ASD and plastics exposure on Guam. Is it not likely that whatever societal changes increased plastic use to skyrocket 5x also caused other seismic shifts in behaviour and exposure and - dare I guess - autism testing?

Wow, this Canadian newspaper piece lays out some references [edit: at least some references are weak] on possible or demonstrated human harms from micro- and nano-plastics:
- linked to declining sperm counts, altered puberty timing, infertility and developmental abnormalities in the reproductive organs
- exposure during the perinatal and early-life periods to disrupt neurodevelopmental health
- Neurodevelopmental outcomes, including attention deficits, lower IQ and behavioural changes
- MNPs do not distribute evenly. Evidence indicates they accumulate in the hippocampus, amygdala, cerebral cortex and substantia nigra. These structures are essential for cognition, emotional regulation and motor control. Their damage accounts for cognitive and behavioural impairments documented in numerous experimental studies.
- can accelerate the onset and progression of conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s [mouse study]
- Through progressive damage to brain regions involved in learning, memory, emotional regulation, anxiety and motor control, MNPs erode the neural substrates underlying behaviour and psychological health. Although they may not directly produce clinical “personality changes,” current evidence indicates that MNPs induce a spectrum of neurobiological and functional impairments that are likely to manifest as marked shifts in cognition, mood and behaviour.
they conclude:
Today, less than 10 per cent of plastic is recycled. [6]. There is much work to be done. Each one of us should avoid anything plastic. Governments at all levels need to impel plastics manufacturers to disclose their chemical composition, and redesign them so that they do not release microplastics or known chemicals of concern. Microplastic pollution is the result of human actions and decisions. We created the problem and now we must create the solution.

But then... why should I think that the G&M would do anything different from Disney or CBS right now?
