#COP30

  3. CW: Australian Labor Government acting slow on Climate. Some thoughts after the ALP National Conference.

Australian Labor Government acting slow on #ClimateAction. Some thoughts after the ALP National Conference. We need to ensure what the Labor Government does commit to do in the climate action space, it does very well. No loopholes.

    * Integrity of #CarbonOffset credits a major loophole in #SafeguardMechanism.
    * We need a climate trigger in the refresh of the EPBC Act. This can prevent new coal and gas approvals.
    * The Nature Repair Market proposed by Plibersek is highly problematic in financialising #biodiverrsity which may lead to perverse extinction outcomes, but driving new profits like in the carbon offsets market.
    * Net Zero Authority already established (a positive) needs to draw up fossil project phaseout contingency plans as part of a #JustTransition framework.
    * Ambitious #FuelEmissionStandards important to get EVs imported and to drive takeup.
    * Impose a #carbontax per tonne on all coal and gas exported. This is a transitional tax to raise revenue.
    * Phaseout Fossil Fuel tax subsidies presently at $11bn per year (#G20 Commitment)
    * Maintain #renewables increase and upgrade grid (transmission), grid and community batteries as urgent priority
    * Prioritise reducing FF methane fugitive emissions and address measuring and reporting methodology that is failing to match satelite data (Commitment to #GlobalMethanePledge)
    * Stop subsidising gas & carbon capture and storage projects (Coal to Hydrogen in Vic, subsidy to Middlearm project Darwin) Chevron's Gorgon project demonstrates #CCS falls far short of meeting targets.
    * Release the ONI Climate Security Report to #TellTheTruth
    * Put in place #bushfire and #heatwave preparedness measures for this summer in co-operation with the states. Fire scientist David Bowman says we are sleepwalking into disaster this summer. Early bushfire warnings already issued for SE Queensland (a month earlier than in 2019)
    * Declare a Climate Emergency (A largely symbolic action, but there can be meaningful consequences)

This was a rapidly put together list after the ALP national conference. A lot more could be added.

  8. How's the UK's #GlobalMethanePledge going after 'green day' last week?

Not well. My colleague @[email protected] found the UK is way off track, in part because HMG is allowing the oil/gas industry to flare 750k homes' worth of gas/year! theguardian.com/environment/20

What changed? Defra gets a 👏for acting on methane suppressants for cows/sheep, while @energygovuk is protecting polluters👎.

The result? A meagre 14% reduction in methane by 2030, vs our analysis that -43% is doable: green-alliance.org.uk/wp-conte

  11. Reducing gas flaring

    ✂️ cuts #methane emissions
💶 turns formerly wasted resources into sources of revenues for producing countries
⚡️ benefits #energysecurity worldwide and implements the #GlobalMethanePledge for the climate

RT @WBG_Energy: After a decade of stalled progress, global gas flaring fell by 5 billion cubic meters in 2022. But efforts to end this wasteful and polluting 160-year-old practice must accelerate. #EndRoutineFlaring

Several other nations have also advanced new methane policies but many leading oil and gas producers have sidestepped the #GlobalMethanePledge and failed to develop credible mitigation policies.

How can we expect meeting the #GlobalMethanePledge without cutting the largest source of methane?

  35. #GlobalMethanePledge news: the UK's produced its first document on how it'll cut methane in light of its #COP27 commitments. gov.uk/government/publications

A quick take on what it says (in 🧵 form)

Obvs the UK is going to big itself up - methane emissions have fallen by 2/3 since 1990, with huge cuts in landfill emissions as the leading cause. HOWEVER, progress stalled after 2013 in both landfill and oil and gas, and farm methane has barely fallen.

But that's the past. What about the future?

  37. We can't ignore animal agriculture's #methane problem. 🐄💨

The #GlobalMethanePledge is a crucially important commitment for our planet's future. Unfortunately, even the architects of the pledge—the US and EU— are not on track to cut emissions by 30% by 2030 as committed.
