  1. @james

    That's really interesting.

I chose that (this) machine because it has no character count limits so I can publish lengthy articles and blog posts - HowTo's, tuts, travel or recipe blogs (you never know, lolz), Etc, where I'm not concerned with #Markdown or other text formats.

I guess this is 5s glaring testament to the lack of viability of mastodon as any sort of actual community building platform (even mastodon .social doesn't really have any real semblance of community), because I never actually even pay attention to the local timeline here - it's completely irrelevant to me... My #friends in the #Fediverse are scattered across the #diaspora (no pun intended) of the Fediverse (Which, IMO, does include Diaspora, lolz).

I treat most other servers the exact same, with the exception of SDF, which really is a true community independant of any single platform infrastructure, including Fediverse servers... I do indeed watch my local timeline on our "private" server there quite closely, because other #SDF members are there and there aren't any of those rude #twitugees about. The other SDF Fediverse server is full of self-entitled #shitposters that came along during the so-called, "November Rain", so I filter a lot of those goombahs out of my streams there. I guess that's what it's actually like over on #Twitter.

If, on the other hand, this particular server is starting to garner a bad reputation, then maybe I should consider looking elsewhere where there are similar technical facilities available.

After running a public mastodon server for two and a half years (it took a whole year to get everyone to migrate away so I could close that hog down, and then almost three years of running an invite only Pleroma server (such a fricken' dream), it's no real surprise that I view mastodon as a mostly deprecated platform due to lack of innovation and feature adoption (much to the chagrin of the userbase as evidenced in the repo's issue tracker over the years) as well as it's lack of suitability for horizontally based "SmallWeb", self-hosted deployments.

You can do it, but why, when there are so many other clearly better Fediverse server platforms?

Don't get me wrong though; mastodon is a good, solid infra upon which to base the deprecated monolithic silo schema -just not until you start to approach the 20,000 user mark. If that's someone's goal, to launch a vertical scaling #monolithic_silo (that only supports plain text and a paltry 500 character count limit per post), then mastodon would be a platform I would wholeheartedly recommend to someone.

Nah, just kidding! 🤣 I'd still recommend a capable fork like #Hometown or #glitch_social lolz.

    That's just my 2¢ FWIW 🙂
