  6. Bellingen's 'vanishing' biodiversity

The 'upgrade' of Gleniffer Road and and Roses Rd. encourages motorists to drive as fast and careless as possible. Road signage is knocked down as no road is ever wide enough.

Biodiversity has to live in this fragmented space with speeding combustion boxes. All year around there are dead beings on the road that drivers kill and mush up.

Here are the latest killings in just a few days:

A large beautiful python on the middle of Roses Rd cut in half with one half missing
A freshwater turtle smeared along the road.
A stunning bright Green Tree Snake killed and tied into a knot.
Many birds along the roadside, crippled and enduring a slow death
    No one counts the carnage.

  13. The koala procreation season and car crashes

Speeding combustion engines are one of the major threats to unarmoured koalas. No road is ever wide enough for vehicles in the Bellingen/Gleniffer area. Road signage is regularly knocked down and speeding is the 24/7 norm.

Koalas like to meet up between June and December. This is the time when the marsupials are forced to negotiate a fragmented habitat of roads, settlements and degraded logging sites.

Switch on your 'car brain' and consider others.

How America (Australia) Can Break Its Highway Addiction

"After a century of rampant roadbuilding, the U.S. highway network is ubiquitous, dominating the American landscape in bucolic rural settings as well as dense urban ones. Rather than being a tool for mobility, it has become a monument to an auto-centric lifestyle that fouls the air and depletes the public coffers. Neither the country nor the planet can afford to keep expanding it."

"At the federal level, even asking questions about the collective climate impact of highway building appears verboten."

  17. Transport systems designed around the car: congestion

“You can’t build your way out of congestion, not in the long term...The standard description is that putting extra lanes on a road is a cure for congestion, in the same way that buying larger pants is a cure for obesity."

“The more capacity you provide, the more people will drive, and it doesn’t get anywhere in the end. Congestion is one of those things that really suggests that we need to invest more in public transport, and we need to take careful thought about how we actually develop new areas, because the more we design and build car dependent areas, the more congestion we’ll have.”

  18. Road and dog density contribute to the extinction of koalas

Road and highway density (road length per square kilometer) and an aggregation of domestic dogs leads to the demise of the marsupial through vehicle crashes and mauling by pets.

  19. Koala deaths though road and highway crashes

“There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

There seems to be a lack of impact data on the 'dispersed' koalas of the 'upgraded' Gleniffer 'Highway' through the industrially logged forests of Bellingen/Gleniffer. The 50s mobility design has achieved its goal, more traffic is speeding now. Meanwhile, photos proliferate of 'koalas in roadside trees'.

  20. Koala habitat and roads

"A research project to compile the first genome map of koalas across eastern Australia has exposed areas where the species is most at risk. The most surprising results were in coastal pockets of NSW, where koala populations are increasingly hemmed between sprawling coastal communities, and the Pacific Highway."

"Those koala populations are really quite constrained genetically because you've got ocean on one side, highway on another and a town to the north and a town to the south. The fracturing of habitat makes it hard for koalas to mix and diversify the genes of their offspring, putting the species at risk of extinction from environmental shocks, and serious diseases like chlamydia."

Five Koalas have been hit on Broken Head Road this year, and many more in other Koala hot spots across the Byron Shire.

The Koala Zone "signs were funded by a grant from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy and Environment, under the NSW Koala Strategy. Koala road strikes and driver speed will be monitored at the sites over the next four years to help us to understand the impacts of vehicle-activated signs on driver speeds and koalas."

“Koala habitats have got smaller and smaller over the years, and the roads through them have got busier...The animals that draw visitors to the Queensland capital are being run down at an alarming rate. Just three days apart in November, separate pairs of mother and joey koalas were hit by vehicles and left to suffer on the side of the road. They were just hit and left. People don’t stop..This year we've hit over 100 within a 6km radius."

  23. The tyranny of automobility and sprawl

While the Bellingen /Gleniffer area is transitioning from an ‘idyllic tourist town’ into a ‘normal Aussie suburb’ (of Coffs Harbour), road congestion gets everyone stuck in traffic.

Car dependent motorists in their SUVs and bloated oversized trucks demand more and wider roads, larger car parking and a right to pothole-free roads for their 'sports utility vehicles’.

Extreme commuting for the necessaries of life are conducted in big private vehicles powered by fossil fuel. An aggregate of ugly big-box stores (large format retail, Coffs) with hostile giant car parks deliver what consumers desire. These consumption hubs are mostly inaccessible to pedestrians and can be dangerous ‘non-places’ (Marc Augé).

The mobility design of old school traffic engineers responds to the sprawling expansion with more of the same: more roads, wider roads and bypassing the last bypass. They call it ‘upgrades’.

As the latest $2.2 billion highway or forest road ‘upgrade/s’ are blasting their way through the landscape, they are silent about the ‘public bads’: the destroyed biodiversity habitat, the downgraded neighbourhoods, the violence and the polluted biosphere.

The ‘normality’ of automobility, or the 'car in the head' in petromodernity together with regulatory inertia make a transition to alternative land uses, energy systems, mobilities and ways of being a challenge.

  25. Koalas

"After European colonization in 1788, more species have become extinct in Australia than in any other country on Earth (Australian Government Department of Agriculture Water and the Environment, 2022)."

In 2020, the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Koalas found that koalas will become extinct before 2050. Why?

    Habitat grab, cars and dogs
"Koalas who had been attacked by a dog, fallen from a tree, and/or been hit by a motor vehicle were more likely to be euthanized or found deceased than released."

  26. Human cost of unsafe driving

"'Selfish' drivers and risk-taking behaviours fuelling road deaths. A recent Australian Road Safety Foundation survey has found 39 per cent of drivers admit to breaking the law on country roads. The head of the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) says its latest research suggests New South Wales drivers are deliberately engaging in unsafe behaviour behind the wheel. It found 39 per cent of drivers surveyed admitted to breaking the law on regional roads as they believed it was safe to do so."

  27. "Our biggest killer is speed."
Lower default speed limits would save lives, road safety researchers say.

"In Australia, we have one of the highest default local speed limits in the world...We seem to think in Australia that to get people to slow down, we need to change the way our streets are structured. There are some motorists who think it is their right to drive in a way that puts themselves and innocent road users at greater risk of being killed or seriously injured."

Bellingen main (shopping) thoughfare is hostile to people. The mobility design of so called 'upgraded' roads (such as Gleniffer Rd., North bank Rd. and Roses Rd.) around the town is enticing motorists in cars and trucks to recklessly race from A to B, degrading the in between landscape.

  28. Roads to deforestation

"A Brazilian judge...issued an injunction to stop the paving of a highway through the center of the Amazon rainforest, amid fears the roadway would boost deforestation and further drive climate change."

"Paving the road would allow illegal loggers and land grabbers to more easily access remote and relatively untouched areas of the world's largest rainforest, environmental experts said. Deforestation is the largest source of Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions that help to drive climate change."

  29. Australia's roads are "killing corridors" for biodiversity
    Mobility design for extinction records

"Appin Road is known as Australia's 'killing corridor' because of the large number of endangered koalas killed on the stretch. Increased traffic on south-west Sydney's Appin Road has resulted in 32 of the endangered marsupials being killed on the notorious stretch since July 2022 – roughly half of all deaths in the district over the same period. Wildlife advocates have long referred to it as Australia's "killing corridor".

    Koala in the gutter
In Bellingen, we reported about the widening of Gleniffer road to aid tourism and the timber extraction industry. Once a quiet thoroughfare, Tuckers Nob SF is now logged and clear-felled in large parts. Vehicles are enticed to speed though the once remnant forests where koalas had their home. Recently one disoriented koala was viewed in the gutter. It seems a matter of time before the speeding vehicles will knock down the last homeless marsupials.

  30. Obituary for another dead bird along Gleniffer Road

The road just out of Bellingen leads along a boulevard of maples (also known as Mistletoe Avenue) with cow paddocks on either side. The straight line of road entices motorists to hit the accelerator. When they are offered a choice, their automatism dictates that they just fly straight. Especially after the 'upgrade' of Gleniffer road speeding has increased.

The dead magpie-lark today was mourned by its partner in the middle of the hot road. Peewees generally pair for life and bring up their offspring together. It is prime breeding season right now.

The pre-cooked cows huddle under the few twigs of shade and watch the carnage.

The magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca) partners sing in duet, each partner is producing about one note a second, but a half-second apart, so that humans find it difficult to tell that there are actually two birds singing, not one.

Thanks to this "mobility design", 'road upgrades' and motorist's behaviour there won't be any more magpie-lark duet singing...

This is just one 'case' of wildlife smeared along the local roads.

  31. Gleniffer Reserves and waterways management

There will be a review of the 5 year management plan of the Gleniffer Reserves. A meeting will be held at the Gleniffer Hall on Tuesday 23rd January from 9.30am to 12 noon.

Once residents and visitors have frequented the local watering holes in Bellingen, the swimming holes at Gleniffer are the main thing to do on a hot day. The mass tourism is funneled via ' the tourist drive'. The scenic country road has just been reconstructed into a highway-like infrastructure. Motorists are now enticed to race from the watering hole to the swimming hole. Cars park as close as possible to the small creeks and unload dogs and gear. The unwanted waste is commonly left behind for the local wildlife and the next load of visitors.

The reserves have a lot of car parking infrastructure and educational signage about settler explorers now.

A "Go before you go” campaign urges visitors to go to a public toilet before leaving the township. Many motorists/swimmers forget and the dogs can't read.

The 'upgrade' of Gleniffer road channeled the flow of visitors into local waterways that have no toilets.

  32. The end of the road trip?

The culture of 'the drive' requires sisyphean road maintenance, especially in a climate emergency.

Mobile sprawl as a form of 'recreation' eliminates the landscape. It is the annihilation of space and time. Motorists want to get from their door to the spectacle in the fastest way possible. The 'in-between space' viewed through the car window vanishes.

The pleasure cruise from A to B does not just degrade the landscape, but also eradicates possibilities of a livable planet. The overuse by the masses in their fossil fuel boxes makes the hillsides crumble, leads to landslides and erosion. After flash flooding, drought and heatwaves the roads have to be rebuilt over and over again.

Here are three cases of 'scenic drives':

  37. The impacts of the road 'renewal' projects in the Bellingen/ Gleniffer area

The stated rationale given for the $5.3 Million 'Road Renewal Program' was to boost tourism and businesses of the Promised Land and the Never Never River. The clearing of vegetation and lining the soil with bitumen and cement incidentally also eased access for the government's logging corporation (Tuckers Nob State Forests).

The year long road construction alone caused air pollution, noise, erosion, habitat loss, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The long term effects for wildlife and residents have been the loss of a livable habitat: Intensification of traffic on Gleniffer Road and Roses Road. Speeding, night time noise from traffic. More garbage in the 'gutter'.

Many fossil fuel enthusiasts are going for their ritualistic 'Sunday drive' on The Loop Drive to the Promised Land. Hoards of wanna be 'bikies' are now attracted to cruise the loop with their souped up machines. No, 'bikie gangs' are the others, here we have the fat grey nomads that finally can afford the 'Easy Rider' Harley-thingy-toy.

The area is also a niche for many local motorbike riders that are exceeding the 94 decibels limit in the age of electric motorcycles. People actually move to the countryside to enjoy the freedom of lawlessness in under-policed areas.

  38. Stop the Child Murder
Zero road deaths ? 'Intelligent speed assist' for stupid speeders on killer roads

"We could help motorists avoid speeding — and therefore reduce emissions and fuel use, improve traffic flow, reduce crashes, lower insurance costs, make streets feel safer to walk and cycle – and totally avoid speeding fines."

"Reducing speeding is crucial if we are to reduce the rising road toll. More than 1,200 people were killed on Australian roads in the past year. Road deaths remain the number one killer of children in Australia and speed is the most common factor in a crash."

"Current measures to reduce speeding haven’t gone far enough. Despite two in three Australian drivers admitting to speeding every week, only one in ten got a speeding fine last year. If you are worried about the government losing out on revenue, don’t. Road traffic crashes cost the Australian economy A$27 billion a year. Speed camera fines generate just $1.5 billion a year."

  39. Save Tucker Nob State Forest
Koala @ Tuckers Nob Oct 2023 video

They say there are no koalas in Tuckers Nob State Forest (026/027)
They say there is no remnant vegetation in the NSW Forest Corporation floral assemblage.
They say there are no threatened species in NSW state forests.

The government corporation is planning to log and clear-fell Tuckers Nob SF
This is to take place during the prime breeding cycle of the koalas.
Numerous plants and animals will lose their home and maybe lives.

  40. Bellingen's Tuckers Nob Forest remnant vegetation to be clear-felled

Dr Tim Cadman documents remnant vegetation and rainforest trees that might soon be eliminated by the NSW Forest Corporation. Giant fossil fuel machinery will cause destruction and might bring pathogens (Myrtle rust) from other areas. In the so called 'plantation' area lantana is thriving. Koalas and other wildlife will be robbed of their habitat. Reality and State Forestry maps seem to have nothing to do with each other.

  41. Bellingen's Tuckers Nob Forest remnant vegetation to be logged

Inside Tuckers Nob State Forest (26/27) Dr. Tim Cadman documented threatened species (again). Many rainforest trees, such as threatened Ringwoods were identified. Syzygium anisatum/Anetholea anisata is endemic to the subtropical Bellinger Valley.
