280 years ago today. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie", raised his standard at Glenfinnan on 19 August 1745, starting the ill-fated 1745 Jacobite uprising. The church is a memorial chapel to the MacDonalds of Glenaladale, the family with whom Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed prior to the raising of the Jacobite standard at Glenfinnan in August 1745.
The church contains a memorial to the Prince and headstones of members of the MacDonald family. Near the altar is the burial place of Father Donald MacDonald, the first parish priest, also one of the family who built the church.

Took a #Wander up the beautiful #GlenFinnan in the #Scottish #Highlands last week and happened to see the #Jacobite #SteamTrain as it was crossing the #Viaduct. You might recognise the train and Viaduct from the #HarryPotter films.

One bad surprise though, the footbridge from #Glenfinnan visitor centre to the east bank of #LochShiel is closed : that implies a detour including 3 km on a busy road, and #British #drivers (and tourists) are not getting better at #sharingTheRoad...

I've made a note about that closure on #OpenStreetMap, #GoogleMaps doesn't have the footpath not bridge at all, so they're unaffected! ;)

One route that seems doable and enjoyable for us is ferry from #FortWilliam to #Camusnagaul, then road-cycle 42km to #Strontian, stopping there for the night (BnB, recommendations?), in the morning cycle up the road (300m↑, 10km) to #Polloch and then take the #LochShiel forestry road to #Glenfinnan (21km, probably a lot of up and down). From there, there are 2 trains back to #FortWilliam at 5pm ad 7pm.
