  2. Woodstock Dreams in the Hall of Bones

Two visitors to the Natural History Museum in London admire the huge skeleton in the main hall.

The Natural History Museum’s most famous skeleton used to be “Dippy,” a diplodocus that dominated that main hall for 112 years. In 2017, it was replaced with a blue whale skeleton (which is what you see here). Dippy wasn’t actually a real skeleton though; it was a composite cast made from plaster and steel. The irony? For over a century, visitors thought they were seeing an actual dinosaur when they were really looking at a rather elaborate replica.

  3. Good Morning #Canada
The Liberals chose a new leader last night & today, we wish #HappyBirthday to Avril Phaedra Douglas Campbell, better known as Kim Campbell. She was the first woman to serve as minister of justice in Canadian history, first as a minister of defence in a NATO member state, and the first female Prime Minister of Canada. I wonder if our attitude towards female leadership would be different had she won reelection in 1993.

  5. Farida Jalalzai, a scholar of gender in politics, on America’s glass ceiling: “I can’t say it was a main reason Kamala Harris lost. But what I can say is it was a factor that contributed to her lack of support, especially when you compare her performance with Joe Biden’s in the same places and with almost all of the same voting groups he won in 2020.”

  6. The place on the Internet where I encounter the most blatant misogyny, by far, is Blind. Has anyone else observed this? It's in every part of the site, besides my private company forum.

It really disturbs me, but doesn't surprise me, that so many professional men are such shitty human beings when they have the cover of anonymity.

"We misunderstand the nature of patriarchy if we think that merely having power and influence are verboten for women. Women are allowed to have power, so long as that power is deployed in ways that are not threatening to a patriarchal order [such as VP to a male president]" - Kate Manne in "Women Can Have a Little Power, as a Treat"

  9. "In the twenty-first century, we should no longer tolerate the idea that behaviours considered normal for men are problematic in women. Whether it is unconscious or deliberate, advice about how we should behave is rooted in the estimation that we don’t, as female leaders, have the capacity to determine how to act for ourselves."

Well said. This is exactly the tone of righteous indignation needed here.

But their indispensability & mgmt shortsightedness keeps them & whole org on hamster wheel. Failure to #promote people out of individual roles to that first rung of mgmt is sometimes called a #stickyfloor , and it especially hurts #women & POC, stunting their careers before they ever have chance to run into #glassceiling archive.ph/SScTE#selection-388

  13. “For many years her career at the University of Pennsylvania was fragile. She migrated from lab to lab, relying on one senior scientist after another to take her in. She never made more than $60,000 a year.”

-- This is true for so many scientists out there, especially female experts who still are discriminated in the promotional practice of universities and research labs.
