  2. This stunning Red Admiral Butterfly kept me company for hours while I worked in my community garden plot a few days ago. They spent the whole time flitting about the echinacea aka coneflowers.

The Echinacea 'Warm Summer' cultivar in the photo is a hybrid of the classic purple coneflower, echinacea purpurea. I always recommend growing the classic for medicinal purposes, and the hybrids as ornamentals.

  3. I almost forgot to post this update; my Tom Thumb peas are producing. This photo was taken 3 weeks ago on May 26 and shows just one of my two dozen plants.

I made a fab pea soup, but we also ate A LOT of them raw straight from the pods.

  4. I grow a lot of different peas every spring. The varieties change from time-to-time, but I always make sure to plant Tom Thumb peas. They are compact, prolific and tasty, and thrive in the ground or in containers.

  5. I grow dandelions on purpose; I love them. Dandelions are gorgeous and edible, they are a resource for pollinators, and they improve soil health.

Gardeners in my area know if they are digging their dandelions out I am happy to replant them in my spaces, but I always encourage them to keep them.

  6. I grow several yarrow cultivars - some medicinal, some ornamental. I found a bunch of these nearly dead on a dollar rack a few years ago; they rallied beautifully. This photo is from last summer.

  7. I am elated to share the news that during 3 rounds of competition, my 13 plant entries won 29 ribbons at the 2023 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show: one 1st Prize; seven 2nd Prize; five 3rd Prize; twelve Honorable Mentions; four Class Commendations. The annual gardening event ran March 4-12.

The plant shown here is my PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM 'NETHERLANDS' (common name "Elkhorn Fern"), a plant I purchased years ago as a baby with just a few green leaves and no basal fronds. I will never get over the thrill of entering the Convention Center and spotting this blue ribbon from across the room.

  12. This Chocolate Chai Pots de Crème recipe results in a decadent chocolate custard flavored with black tea and fragrant spices.

    glamorosicooks.com/recipe/choc

The garnish is homemade whipped cream with a dusting of cinnamon and a trio of candied orange peels. I posted about the orange peels last week - they are in my feed right before this post.

This is a perfect dessert for Valentine's Day, so gather your ingredients and make this for your sweetie or for yourself.

  15. Happy birthday to our sweet pup, Tia, who turned 7 on January 6!

I know this photo is slightly blurry, but it's one of my favorites because of the expression on Tia's face. She was SO happy I gave her this brand new faux fur blanket (which I had actually bought for myself because it was so soft and it was the same pretty color as her).

Tia LOVES her blankies - she has quite a few and just got another one for Christmas.

  17. One of my family's long-standing traditions is to spend the fall cooking all kinds of quince recipes. Quince is a fragrant yellow fruit in the apple and pear family that turns a rosy blush shade when cooked. I grew up participating in annual quince harvests, and now for years I've grown my own quince.

Among my favorite things to make during our annual quince fest is Membrillo, a sweet paste of Spanish origin that pairs well with cheese and is lovely in baked goods. For this Throwback Thursday I'm posting my photo of Membrillo with Manchego cheese and Marcona almonds, and a link to the recipe I originally published in 2015, and then again in 2017.

  18. One of my favorite things about my region's colder months is the seasonal food. I especially love winter squash, which comes with the bonus of having edible seeds that are delicious when roasted.

  19. Veronica spicata "Red Fox" - Spike Speedwell
Asclepias tuberosa - Butterfly Weed (milkweed)

I manage what is technically a pollinator garden in my area, but everyone calls it "The Butterfly Garden." In addition to flora chosen to reflect our status as a Monarch Waystation, we are committed to native plant selections that encourage ALL butterflies and moths (we have 200+ species in our area), bees and other beneficial insects, and of course, birds.

This photo shows some of our Red Fox Veronica with Butterfly Weed in the background. Can you spot the bee?

  20. This Chocolate Hummus is delicious any time of year, but I am sharing the recipe here now since a lot of us are in holiday mode and perhaps looking for easy-to-make party food.

I prefer desserts that are half-sweet as opposed to sugary, so my Chocolate Hummus recipe follows that formula. I use date syrup instead of sugar, but you can use any sweetener -- and any amount -- that you like. Other ingredients include garbanzo beans, tahini and cocoa powder, but there are numerous variations and substitutions listed in the recipe.

The Chocolate Hummus recipe linked below was originally published on my website in 2019. It is a fantastic appetizer, snack or dessert and can be prepared in around 10 minutes.

  21. Zinnia elegans - assorted

Zinnias are a warm-season annual flower. They are easy to grow from seed, and also widely available as nursery starts every spring. They come in so many colors, shapes and sizes that there truly is a zinnia for every garden. Along with being beautiful, they are always abuzz with pollinator activity.

The colorful bouquet in my photo features a selection of flowers from my community garden plot. The coral and pink bloom is a Cactus Zinnia; the green bloom in the bottom-right corner is an Envy Zinnia; the pale pink and fuchsia blooms - and the almost completely hidden orange bloom - are from a mixed seed pack. The yellow flowers are actually coreopsis that self-seeded into my zinnia border, so thank you wind and wildlife for the gift!

  22. Cucamelon Refrigerator Pickles are fast and easy to make: 30 minutes prep and 2 weeks in the fridge result in delicious, bite-sized pickles.

The Cucamelon (Melothria scabra) is an annual vine in the Cucurbitaceae plant family that includes cucumbers, melons, and squash. Cucamelons are known by numerous names including Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon, and in their native Central America, *sandita,* which means “little watermelon.” Cucamelons taste like a cross between cucumber and lime.

My recipe is based on my Father's original recipe that I learned as a child; I adapted it for cucamelons and published it first in 2016, and then again in 2017.

  23. Rudbeckia triloba (Brown-eyed Susans)

I started these Brown-eyed Susans from seed back in the mid-twenty-teens, and they've self-seeded every year since. I LOVE them - they are such happy flowers - and pollinators adore them too.

This photo is from late-July and we are now at the end of November, so these flowers are done for the season. They are, however, still providing food and shelter for birds. Goldfinches and sparrows, in particular, flock to the dried seedheads.

  24. Passiflora Incarnata - Purple Passionflower aka Maypop

The Purple Passionflower resembles a plant from Hogwarts, and the Latin name, Passiflora Incarnata, sounds like a spell. In addition to being covered with otherworldly blooms that draw butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, the perennial vine produces delicious fruits the size of small owl’s eggs.

I started my passionflowers from seed in 2016. They were floriferous and fruitful through November 2020, but didn’t re-emerge as expected in the Spring of 2021. All that remained was the photo in this post.

Seasons passed with no sign of the vine, so I was thrilled to discover the familiar tri-lobed leaves climbing my fence again in July of 2022. My passionflower had sprung to life after 20 months of dormancy.

    Renneverate!

    Nature is magic!

  25. Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower)

Centaurea cyanus, commonly known by a host of names including cornflower and bachelor’s button, comes in a variety of colors, but the blue blooms are my absolute favorite.

Cornflowers are easy to grow from seed, they are delicious to pollinators and humans, and they can be used to make a gorgeous natural dye.

Today I spent the afternoon working in my community garden. It was freezing and windy, but also glorious; I love winter gardening. After pulling assorted root vegetables and tweezing saffron, I finished up by sowing cornflower seeds in my plot (allotment). Nature willing, they will emerge in late March and start blooming in May.
