The Arctic Just Experienced Its Warmest Year on Record
The past 10 years have been the warmest recorded in a region that is heating at two to four times the global average.https://murica.website/2025/12/the-arctic-just-experienced-its-warmest-year-on-record/

Last week in the Arctic, September 30th rundown:
1) An oil tanker travelling from the Russian Arctic to China, without any ice shielding, narrowly avoided a serious disaster. It struck sea ice and got stuck for days, avoiding a spill as Russia courts tragedy in the north.

Why in the News? Today, we focus on the Hindu Kush Himalaya—a vital yet vulnerable mountain system often called the "Third Pole" of the Earth.
Spanning eight countries, the Hindu Kush Himalaya is home to the largest reservoir of ice and snow outside the polar regions.

Still haven't gotten around comprehending how to convert a lat-lon grid with ice thickness to a correct regional sum of freshwater amount in Gt.
But something else keeps popping up in my head now.
Peltier's ice model / reconstruction (dunno which it is) doesn't include sea ice at all https://www.atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca/~peltier/data.php
Tarasov's GLAC1D model does. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10159104
At least the melted parts of sea ice is included. But not the ever-lasting part. That ever-lasting part is melting today, and has been melting for a long while now. But it didn't melt during past AMOC hickups. What melted back then was ice that covered Scotland with a whopping 400m ice wall. And higher ice mountains still melted in other regions. But not sea ice in the Arctic ocean.
...hm. What I really want to know is how the amount of freshwater influx back then
compares to the amount today, and how today's very little left-over ice would be capable of stopping AMOC.We'll be having a blue Arctic ocean before 2030, says a new study https://www.ft.com/content/63fbcf2b-9acc-4ccb-ac12-9f3b78e85b68

Wouldn't it be cool to know by then how much ice in kilos or Gt melted ? And how that amount compares to the amount before previous AMOC shutdowns during the LGM and deglaciasation?

Sites with #radioactive material more vulnerable as #ClimateChange increases #wildfire, #flood risks
Climate change increasingly threatens research laboratories, weapons sites and power plants across the nation that handle or are contaminated with #radioactive material or perform critical energy and defense research.

The GAO found that 60 of 75 U.S. plants were in areas with high flood hazard and 16 were in areas with high wildfire potential."

Ocean water is rushing miles underneath the ‘#DoomsdayGlacier’ with potentially dire impacts on #SeaLevelRise
By Laura Paddison, CNN
Published May 22, 2024"The #ThwaitesGlacier in #WestAntarctica — nicknamed the 'Doomsday Glacier' because its collapse could cause catastrophic sea level rise — is the world’s widest glacier and roughly the size of Florida. It’s also #Antarctica’s most vulnerable and unstable glacier, in large part because the land on which it sits slopes downward, allowing ocean waters to eat away at its ice.
"#Thwaites, which already contributes 4% to global #Sea Level rise, holds enough ice to raise sea levels by more than 2 feet. But because it also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, scientists have estimated its complete collapse could ultimately lead to around 10 feet of sea level rise — a catastrophe for the world’s #coastal communities."

🚨 UN weather agency issues ‘red alert’ on #ClimateChange after record heat, ice-melt increases in 2023
"Earth’s issuing a distress call. The latest State of the Global Climate report shows a planet on the brink. #FossilFuel pollution is sending #ClimateChaos off the charts." - U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
By JAMEY KEATEN and SETH BORENSTEIN
Updated 6:11 PM EDT, March 19, 2024GENEVA (AP) — "The U.N. weather agency is sounding a 'red alert' about global warming, citing record-smashing increases last year in #GreenhouseGases, land and water temperatures and melting of glaciers and sea ice, and is warning that the world’s efforts to reverse the trend have been inadequate.
"The World Meteorological Organization said there is a 'high probability' that 2024 will be another record-hot year.
"The Geneva-based agency, in a 'State of the Global Climate' report released Tuesday, ratcheted up concerns that a much-vaunted climate goal is increasingly in jeopardy: That the world can unite to limit planetary warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from #preindustrial levels."
