Daniel Tyerman was a Congregationalist missionary. His heart broke to see women suffering from effects of foot binding. Fashion blinded people to suffering.

Is there a precedent for missionaries seeking to transform all of society? Or should they stick to the gospel?

Is it possible that everyone could eventually find an issue where they’d find 19th century Congregationalism quite an annoyance, and be glad it no longer exists?

Johannes van der Kemp, Dutch, Reformed minister, says the 8thC prevents you from impoverishing a debtor. “Falling on” the debtor & turning them out naked is hateful, as per Matthew 18.

Today, the hateful conduct is to be bothering wealth creators. Modern preachers are instead to be talking about the gospel, commandments, and the forgiveness of sins.
