  1. Until October 2022 when I left Twitter, I followed David Perell on Twitter.

    I thought he was smart.

He had produced a video series about the philosopher Rene Girard. Perell said that #Girard is without a doubt *the* philosopher who had the most impact on Perell's thinking. So, naturally I was intrigued.

Later, Perell shared that the Bible is the most printed book on Earth and yet he knows nothing about it. Shouldn't an educated person not have read the most printed book in history? Like, what education do you have if you cannot talk about the most-read book? He recommended everyone to read the Bible, even if he disagrees with it or doesn't believe in God.

I do *not* believe in God, so an atheist liking the Bible struck me as odd but the argument made sense to my 2022 self.

Then Musk killed Twitter's API and thus Tweetbot and I left for Mastodon. For a few weeks, I even mourned that people I had followed until then, including Perell or Naval Ravikant, don't join Mastodon but rather stayed on Twitter. Although you now had to use the shitty website because all apps were dead, and the website was full with ads. Back then, it didn't make sense to me why they don't come over to the non-corporate platform. (I was naive, yes, and I had listened way too much to disgusting capitalists, yes.) Back then Elon Musk was also still considered a genius. Only slowly did people start to realize the Gell-Mann amnesia effect. As in, Musk is actually a moron. End of 2022 feels like a lifetime ago.

When people still hung out on Twitter (now X) even in early/mid 2023, I had to accept that they're all fascists. Sometimes I still logged into X to see what the people I used to follow, were up to. Perell had by then turned fully into a Christian nutcase. Or maybe he just played the part and posed as one, as part of the USA turning to Christofascism. With these people you never know.

Anyway, also after I left Twitter, an (unfortunately German-language) documentary by 3sat showed how Rene Girard, Ayn Rand, Curtis Yarvin, Stanford University, and Peter Thiel are all connected. Christianity and #fascism, connected.

Anyway, what I want to say, I guess, is if someone says that he/she likes Rene Girard, they're more likely than not a fascist. Beware.

  2. Es ist geschafft, freue mich sehr! 🌞📗🌈

  3. I've long considered the connexion of Law and Morality to be weak and tenuous.

    philosophics.blog/2026/01/31/w

After listening to this survival-cannibalism-on-the-high-seas story by Judge Coleridge in 1870 and the attendant murder convictions, my opinion gets categorically worse. Pictures at 11.

  4. That the ideology of an ultra-reactionary violent billionaire #TERF like #PeterThiel revolves around Renee #Girard's theory of the scapegoat as the constructed-exception at the locus of political power, all while he at once stokes fear about a nonexistent #LGBTQ pederasty while helming a empire offers as its highest prestige the right to traffic and abuse children without consequence, is all you need to know.

  5. "Mobilizing Rousseau against Thiel, we may be more optimistic about human nature and believe in the possibility of democracy. We should reject Thiel’s false dilemma between state totalitarianism and libertarianism: there are more options in between, even in the U.S. And even global governance could be organized in a (more) democratic way.

Yet it remains a challenge to deal with the problem of violence in a way that does not lead to totalitarianism. This is not only an issue in the post-9/11 context in which Thiel’s thoughts developed, but also and perhaps especially in today’s divided and polarized political world.

This divisive context is not unrelated to tech. Current digital social media, including the Facebook Thiel invested in, have monetized mimetic desire. Girard’s theory has become a business model. The result is there for all to see, and it’s rather ugly. Social media have become the main theatres of mimetic rivalry. Artificial intelligence, in turn, doesn’t seem to make things better, undermining democracy and creating the soil for new forms of authoritarianism and totalitarianism.

That takes us back to the tech world. In practice, Thiel’s way of dealing with the Girardian problem is Palantir. Monopoly as a means to avoid mimetic competition, a classic recipe of Big Tech (as Palaver reminded his audience in his recent lecture at the University of Vienna). But also surveillance and control of the population to deal with the problem of violence. Rejecting the state, Thiel has raised a new Leviathan. Like other libertarian Tech bros, he criticises surveillance and control when it comes from the nation state, but meanwhile he has installed his own “Antichrist” anchored in the private sector (which in turn services Trump’s surveillance state and foreign states)."

  6. The Trump era isn’t peak partisanship—it's the collapse of a shared reality. Each faction lives inside its own cosmology, rewriting time to vindicate its prophecy. Madison feared factions would mistake part for whole. Our moment dissolves the idea of the whole entirely. Truth has become performance.

  7. Vielen Dank, @Hans 🙏

  9. "Peter Thiel’s Armageddon speaking tour has—like the world—not ended yet. For a full two years now, the billionaire has been on the circuit, spreading his biblically inflected ideas about doomsday through a set of variably and sometimes visibly perplexed interviewers. He has chatted onstage with the economist podcaster Tyler Cowen about the katechon (the scriptural term for “that which withholds” the end times); traded some very awkward on-camera silences with the New York Times columnist Ross Douthat; and is, at this very moment, in the midst of delivering a four-part, off-the-record lecture series about the Antichrist in San Francisco.

Depending on who you are, you may find it hilarious, fascinating, insufferable, or horrifying that one of the world's most powerful men is obsessing over a figure from sermons and horror movies. But the ideas and influences behind these talks are key to understanding how Thiel sees his own massive role in the world—in politics, technology, and the fate of the species. And to really grasp Thiel’s katechon-and-Antichrist schtick, you need to go back to the first major lecture of his doomsday road show—which took place on an unusually hot day in Paris in 2023. No video cameras recorded the event, and no reporters wrote about it, but I’ve been able to reconstruct it by talking to people who were there.

The venue was a yearly conference of scholars devoted to Thiel’s chief intellectual influence, the late French-American theorist René Girard. (Thiel identifies as a “hardcore Girardian.”)"

  12. 🚀🧐 Imagine taking a French philosopher and turning him into a corporate manifesto for #tech overlords and political wannabes. Who knew Girard's musings on human desire would be the secret sauce for Silicon Valley's Dr. Evil and his apprentice, J.D. Vance, to unleash their master plan? Spoiler alert: it wasn't. 📚💡
