  1. "Chinese Plate with Artichokes, Rose, and Strawberry," Giovanna Garzoni, 1652-60.

Garzoni (1600-70) was an Italian Baroque painter. She started off doing religious and historical subjects but made her fame with her still lifes, painted with great detail and precision.

Her family is believed to have been artists (many details of her early life is unknown) and it's believed she apprenticed under her uncle. She was known as "the chaste Giovanna," as she refused to marry and wanted to remain a virgin; I wonder if she just didn't want to be bothered and wanted to focus on her work. She became so popular that she could name her own price, and died a wealthy woman.

This style of still life was popular, with botanic objects displayed on Asian ceramics, which were a huge status symbol. We've got a pink rose but the artichokes dominate...and they're flower buds, believe it or not.

  2. "Lioness with an Open Eye," Giovanna Garzoni, c. 1639.

Garzoni (1600-70) was a Baroque painter of significant skill, known mostly as a painter of still lifes and botanicals with precision and balance, but now also studied for the subtle references to the female body, and now is viewed as something of a feminist.

A busy artist, she did a lot of work for the Medici family and was so famous and popular that it was noted she could have set any price she wanted for her work. She never married (according to most historians, some say she did but it was short-lived) and devoted her life to her work.

This picture is a humorous copy of a similar etching by Albrecht Durer. Garzoni did a number of these, but while Durer's lioness just seems to be asleep, here Garzoni gives her a open eye, suggesting a wink, and tweaks the mouth just a bit to give a hint of a smile.

  4. "Chinese Vase with Flowers and Fruits," Giovanna Garzoni, c. 1641.

Garzoni (1600-1670) was known as "The Chaste Giovanna" because of a vow she reportedly made to remain a virgin; perhaps she just wanted to be free of worldly entanglements while working on her art?

She was one of the first women to be a still-life painter, although she also did religious and mythological works. Recent critics have found what they feel are references to female body parts in her works, and a few now hail her as an early feminist painter.

Her work was hugely popular, and one writer said that she could have asked any price she wanted. Her work was very inventive, mixing objects that normally weren't portrayed together. She never married, although some believe she was married briefly in her youth, but separated from her husband. Still, she was an independent lady making her own way in the world, so she deserves respect.
