At 9 years old, a sushi counter in Colorado changed Kyle Connaughton's life. Decades later, that moment still shapes his work. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2026/04/27/food-drink/kyle-connaughton-kyoto-sonoma/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #fooddrink #kyoto #finedining #kaiseki #californiacuisine #gion

With last month's opening of the Imperial Hotel, Kyoto and now Capella Kyoto, the ancient capital's most storied geisha district is fast becoming a hot spot for luxury hotels. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2026/04/24/travel/capella-kyoto-luxury-hotel-opening-gion-geisha/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #travel #hotels #geisha #kyoto #gion

"Gion Matsuri and Japanese Festivals": Cerritos College (Los Angeles) Study Abroad in Kyōto, July 15, 2025
This might be the most gorgeous slideshow you ever see, informative as well about the Gion festival and Kyōto. Japanese festivals are above all presented as Shintō rituals. The Gion Matsuri began in 869 to ward off epidemics, but was ironically canceled during the recent pandemic. Longtime research and insider experiences in Japanese, with guidance by a Gion festival leader, culminate in fascinating information and annotated photos.

A pencil drawing of a Japanese geisha/geiko/geigi woman in the ochaya in Gion Kobu, Kyoto, Japan, in my Strathmore 5.5 x 8.5 Sketch sketchbook. The geisha/geiko woman is giving a confused facial expression on her face.

Tatsumi Daimyōjin (辰巳大明神), festooned with sakura.
A mischievous tanuki once delighted in hiding beneath the nearby bridge to scare unsuspecting maiko and geisha as they passed by. He was later enshrined here (to calm his still restless spirit).

Last rebuilt in 1907, the 11.7m granite bridge is barely 60cm wide.
Bubbling up on Hiei-zan, the Shirakawa (白川) eventually flows through Gion. Fine sand would flow down from the mountain, settling on the bed. In the sun it would shine white, giving 'White River' its name.

🙏BRIDGE OF ASCETICS🌉
Not too far from Chion-in (知恩院), Gyōja-bashi (行者橋 'Bridge of Ascetics') straddles the Shirakawa River (白川).
Monks participating in the 'Kaihōgyō' (回峰行) cross the narrow bridge on their 75th day, en route to Yasaka-jinja (八坂神社).
