  1. Yoshimasa created the 'tearoom' in consultation with Ōsen Keisan (黄川景三) of Shōkoku-ji (相国寺).
The name Dōjinsai (同仁斎) comes from the words of Han Yu (韓愈), a leading Chinese Tang Dynasty scholar..."A saint sees all people in the same light" (聖人は一視同人).

  2. Edo period garden renovations mean only 5 of the original 'landscapes' remain from Yoshimasa's time.

  3. The current form of the sand garden dates to renovations in the early Edo period, but a theory has been put forward that the cone originated in Yoshimasa's time.
It may have started as a smaller hillock on which guests could sit to enjoy the moon!

  4. 1) THE BALD PAVILION🥇🥈

Although the idea persists that it was always Shōgun Yoshimasa's intention to cover Jishō-ji's (慈照寺) Kannon-den (観音殿) in silver foil, to perhaps mimic his grandfather's 'Golden Pavilion', there is no evidence such plans ever existed.

  5. And what better sweets to enjoy with a trip to the 'Silver Pavilion' than Tawaraya Yoshitomi's (俵屋吉富) 'ginshadan' (銀沙灘).
Flavoured with hama-natto (浜納豆), the higashi (干菓子) have a sweet and salty taste that pairs perfectly with matcha🍵🙌

  6. 🐈🍬FELINE FRIENDS ALONG THE PHILOSOPHER'S PATH🍂🌅

Golden hour at Ginkaku-ji's (銀閣寺) Kōgetsudai (向月台) and Ginshadan (銀沙灘), representations in white sand of (possibly) Mt. Fuji (富士山) and China's Lake Xi (西湖 'West Lake').

  7. Let us end our autumn stroll down The Path of the Philosophy at a temple that needs no introduction...

    ...Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺).

  9. 10) ASHIKAGA MEMORIAL😇

At the base of Daimonji-yama (大文字山) stands Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺/慈照寺), founded by Ashikaga Yoshimasa (足利義政 1436-90).

Some believe Yoshimasa began Daimonji in order to commemorate the death of his son Yoshihisa (足利義尚 - 9th Shogun) in 1489.

  10. From noon on August 15th until noon the next day people gather at Jōdo-in (浄土院), beside Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺), to write down their prayers on 'gomaki' (護摩木 wooden prayer tablets).

These are then bundled together and carried up the mountain to be used within the bonfires.

  12. By the end of the Ōnin War (1467-77) only 1 of the Tōji-ji temples survived...Kitatōji-ji (北等持寺). It is this temple that we now know as Tōji-in.

The Ashikaga shōgunate was both a blessing and curse for Kyōto. The clan's patronage aided in an extraordinary blossoming of culture, but their weakening grip on power resulted in a 10 year civil war that completely destroyed the capital and led to the "Warring States period".

  13. The sand mound has a small depression at its summit to give it an even more Mt. Fuji-like appearance, and indicating that the garden was best viewed from the upper floor of the pavilion. White Shirakawa sand (白川砂) was chosen to best reflect the light of the full moon.

  17. A photo from a trip to Japan many years ago. Before my visit to Ginkaku-ji temple, I never realised that moss could be ground cover in gardens instead of grass.
