Gilman, Colorado: A Toxic Ghost Town in Paradise
To visit the famous Vail Region of Central Colorado, we drove the gorgeous route of U.S. 24 (Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway) from Leadville. As we came around a sharp hillside curve, we saw the remnants of an eerie abandoned town set high atop a cliff overlooking the deep Gilman Gorge.
Gilman ghost town from U.S. 24Set amidst the forested mountainsides, the Town of Gilman, Colorado could have been a vacationers paradise. It is located above the Gilman Gorge, one of America’s most challenging whitewater rapid courses and is just a short distance from the ski resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, and Ski Cooper.
Instead, Gilman is a heavily polluted toxic waste site of abandoned and derelict mid-20th century homes, a mine processing plant, relics of mining operations, and a hillside slag pile. It’s quite a forlorn and forsaken place that is complete antithesis of the image one perceives of the Vail area and of Colorado.
Founded in 1886 as a mining town, during the 1980s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shut down the town and declared it a Superfund site due to groundwater contamination. It has sat empty on its hilltop perch ever since.
One cannot legally visit Gilman as it has been cordoned off for the general public’s safety. Despite this, vandals have found their way into this ghost town leaving their visible legacies in broken windows and graffiti.
Eagle Mine Slurry Pipeline Trestle from Tigiwon RoadJust outside of the ghost town itself is the most interesting and impressive feature of the former Eagle mining operations — a multi-mile long wooden trestle that carries a slurry pipeline from the mining site to its waste treatment plant. Though largely inaccessible, it can be seen from U.S. 24. A better view is available where it crosses the Eagle River and Tigiwon Road. Despite its the nasty mix it would carry, the trestle is quite an engineering feat that should be preserved for future generation to marvel. Peace!
