Jazz ist für mich schon fast eine sakrale Kunstform. Das ist was für Genies, lange Nächte, zu viel Zigarettenrauch und immer auch Schmerz und elementare Emotionen. Kaum eine Figur wurde in der Geschichte des Jazz wohl so konsequent mythologisiert wie Miles Davis. Der Dokumentarfilm von Stanley Nelson Jr. versucht gar nicht erst, diesen Mythos zu zerstören. Interessanter ist, wie er ihn auseinandernimmt. Schicht für Schicht. Nicht ehrfürchtig, sondern analytisch. Und genau darin liegt der Wert dieses Films. (ARTE, Wh.)

Decided to revisit the classics. So I started the evening with Disc 1 of All of You. Went from there to the Gil Evans Orchestra. Then Sketches of Spain. Realised I only had time for one more before bed despite wanting to hear both A Love Supreme and Kind of Blue.

Flipped a coin, and Kind of Blue it was. Definitely a better fit for a 2am listen, so I'm happy enough.

Morning, the rain has broken, hot coffee to hand & #NowPlaying #SketchesOfSpain for the second time in a row. I love #MilesDavis with #GilEvans. Between this and #PorgyandBess, this wins out. #Saeta is quite unlike anything else I can bring to mind - that soulful horn, with the weird drone deep in the background then breaking into a march… Evocative stuff.

This is the #MobileFidelity 33, the best version I’ve heard by a country mile.

Holy crap, look at this band…check out just the summit gathering of bass players. This is the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album “Gil Evans Orch., Kenny Burrell, & Phil Woods.” Ludicrously out of print. Gil plays a lot of piano here—a rare opportunity to hear him stretch out. #gilevans #jazz

George Adams on tenor and David Sanborn on alto sound perfect together. Only Gil Evans would have figured that out and written specifically for them.
