For an art piece I’m looking to include some “good enough” illuminated manuscript art, including #calligraphy (vernacular English, not Latin) & #gilding

Actual calligraphy is a stunning SKILL and prob not smth I’m cut out for (*whines in EDS*), so I’m looking for advice on how to learn something passable? key stylistic details to be mindful of?

Please lay thine advice, resources, methods (& maybe hype? I am hella handwriting insecure but I rlly wanna make this!) upon me, thy fool

A client reach out to me on behalf of her mother who wanted pieces created that gave a nod to a 1935 copy of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam that she owns. Since she can’t give all four of her daughters the one book, she asked me to create 4 pieces each of a different favorite stanza in a style reminiscent of her copy.

Turns out, I'm supposed to let the glue sit for 30 minutes before applying the gold. My failure to follow directions caused the smearing you see but I learned and that's what's important.

At a manuscript gathering last night at Standford—a Korean manuscript was shared. The whole thing was written/drawn in shell gold—even the guide lines. It was the most beautiful and shiny shell gold I have seen. It has convinced me I need to sit down and grind my shell even more! Guess I know my weekend tv watching activity.

The photos do not do it justice! The shell gold was so good it almost looked like flat gold leaf.
