Marissa and her mom and I went to see "The Yeomen of the Guard" at the GSVLOC last night.
I noted on the ride back that nobody ended up having to marry the older woman! It was even set up at the start of act 2 as a possibility. But, Wikipedia tells that _was_ part of the original plot, it was just cut from this production. So the sum total is two marriages arranged through blackmail, which seems excessive and shows that even when old W.S. is trying to be less topsy-turvy, he simply cannot help himself.
Also the Merylls are assholes for not cluing Elsie in on the deception.

Even though we did the Pirates of Penzance as a school production, I had still heard the Elements Song first.

#RIP Tom Lehrer. Hier der wunderbare Elements' Song zur Melodie des im angelsächsischen Raum sehr bekannten Major General's Song von Gilbert und Sullivan.
In D wurde er bekannt, weil er Georg Kreisler vorwarf, daß „Tauben vergiften im Park“ ein Plagiat von „Poisoning Pidgeons in the Park“ sei. Da aber Text und Musik verschieden sind, bleibt nur ein rechtlich unerheblicher Ideenschutz.

I didn't know about the Kevin Kline Pirates of Penzance film. Just listened to 'With Cat-Like Tread'. I still prefer the Jon English performance... but this is, in terms of pure volume, even louder.

Marissa and my MiL and I went to "Patience" today at the Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. I had forgotten how very pointy this one is; among the targets are:
* dukes
* poets
* the aesthetic movement
* moralizing poetry
* weird poetic pronunciations
* true love
* the British army's self-image
* men dressing in ways that impress other men, and assuming it's attractive to women !! (this might be a modern gloss but it's kind of explicitly there in the plot too)
* women getting old (I think I side with Sullivan on this, what the hell was Gilbert's hang-up)It gives me great joy to imagine W.S. sitting down and saying "today I have to write some bad poetry" and probably having to throw out the first couple versions as not bad enough.

Usually, when I listen to operas, or far more often, operettas, I prefer recordings from the 1950's and earlier. This is because I prefer the older singing styles and techniques. The modern ones tend to give me a headache and don't sound right in any case. But if I find a later recording of an older singer, or an extraordinarily rare modern recording of a singer who follows the old style (some do exist), I will listen to it. The Knowle Operatic Society (under that name, as they changed later and now do a lot of modern rubbish), is an exception to that rule. They can't exactly compare to the old singers, but they definitely respect the plays they perform and do their best. They even did King's Rhapsody, for which I am eternally grateful. As any fan of Ivor Novello knows, finding his plays with full dialogue is almost impossible. Anyway, they also did this one, Merrie England, by Edward German. I haven't seen this yet, but this man is supposed to be so similar to Gilbert and Sullivan that Arthur Sullivan himself said he should be his successor, and indeed, after Sullivan's death, German finished his Emerald Aisle, which I also must see.

So now, I will watch this one. Please, if anyone knows where I can find full recordings (or old recordings of songs) from English or Viennese (translated into English if full) operettas let me know. I am always seeking more. And if you are a singer of the old style, thank you so much for sharing your lovely work with the world!

Ninety years before people first walked on the moon, in 1879 Gilbert and Sullivan gave us their comic opera The Pirates of Penzance and--in it--this funny little song "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General".

84 years ago today, Feb. 29, 1940, the NY Times ran a front page item congratulating Frederic (of Pirates of Penzance fame) on completing his indentures as a pirate.
