A post to gush about new and old toys, because most of my local friends don't give a fuck:
Two weeks ago after the release of the incredible #assembly64 client for mac/winders/linux from Hackers With Style, I was so impressed with the software, I ordered a cartridge based, cycle-exact floppy drive emulator PACKED with extra features called the #1541Ultimate II+ from #Gideon's Logic.
For those not directly plugged in to the Commodorkosphere, Gideon is the genius who's creations from which the re-re-re-resurrected #commodore brand built their flagship products.
So the 1541U2 arrived two days ago. I got it set up on the C64c I've been playing with since the 1980s and connected to it from Assembly64 on my macbook over ethernet and everything worked perfectly, first try. Awesome!
44 years worth of music, graphics, demos, games and tools is a staggering amount of material to sift through, but with this combination of software and hardware, it's all at my fingertips to use immediately on real hardware by simple double-click.
This is key because as with anything, when there's a lot of it, a lot of it sucks. Instead of hours wasted scavenger hunting and unpacking disk images or even actual disks, it's all a double click away. If it sucks, no sunk cost, no frustration, just clicky clicky on the next thing and it copies over, loads and launches.
(or it can be routed to a local emulator, too... or both. Why not both? )
Anyway it's the most fun I've had with my C64 since my dad let me start using the modem back in 1990. Also no more frustrations from 40 year old floppy drives giving up mid-access, neither.
Hell this 1541U is so great, I decided to order the C64 Ultimate instead of continuing to invest in clever hacks and sketchy fixes for my ever-aging collection of OG Commodore hardware. I'm not holding my breath but it would be amazing if it showed up in time for this year's #revision easter democene party.
Anyway that's my #retro #commodore ted talk for today. If you're on the fence about buying new hardware for old computers, I can tell ya Gideon's products are worth every euro.

So how about you? On board with the new hotness yet? Do you love it?

CW: Gideon the Ninth (Locked Tomb 1) spoilers & venting
#Gideon didn't even kiss any of the cute necromancers or cavaliers wtf. she realistically sacrificed herself for her bully friend as a virgin. now I just have to follow this up with some self-hating bully feeling sorry for herself for absorbing the soul of her only peer/the best character out of the ninth house.
furthermore, the cryptic note and her origins on the ninth planet are left unexplained so now I'm continuing in the hope that the mystery gets resolved instead of just being a useful cliche for a fantasy protagonist who's now effectively dead. -

If ya wanted to see all the variants on my "stubborn ass wants to do purely black and white ink but doesn't want to hatch" attempts. Got a favorite, varying levels of anatomical correctness and details aside?

I think many would agree that today we find ourselves in a situation where many things we hold dear and thought were settled over the past 75 or even 100 years are now under attack and threatened to be dismantled. I think about me as a person with disabilities. Many employment opportunities available through #DEI programs are now gone. Disability rights in general are being weakened because we need to bow to the needs and wants of business. And then there’s #SCOTUS nuking #Roe and almost certainly setting their sites on #SameSexMarriage next. And why stop there? Why not get rid of #Miranda and #Gideon while they’re at it? Perhaps even #Loving to boot? And also decide that maybe the #Confederacy was victorious after all? I think I’m in need of lunch and possibly an attitude adjustment.

Knocked Loose – You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To [Things You Might Have Missed 2024]
By Dear Hollow
Is the hype surrounding Knocked Loose legit? Making (perhaps unwanted) waves with that “arf arf arf” breakdown in “Counting Worms” and waking babies, and “being woke,”1 with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with collaborator Poppy, the Kentucky group is getting its fair share of backlash and praise in equal measure. It’s easy to approach You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To in this light, but the novelty is merely a facet of the album. In many ways, the act’s third full-length is a continuation of 2016’s bruising Laugh Tracks or 2019’s sludge-inflected A Different Shade of Blue, but an altogether more mature and heftier affair. Yes, Poppy’s witchy shrieks and haunting croons appear in a breakdown buildup in “Suffocate” and Chris Motionless from Motionless in White rears his Gothy nu-metal head in “Slaughterhouse 2,” but beneath the radio-friendly gloss is an album dedicated to tragedy and grit.
As always, Knocked Loose balances its appropriately suffocating beatdown hardcore instrumentals with a three-prong vocal attack, helmed by the feral shrieks of Bryan Garris.2 Featuring frantic Converge-esque choruses (“Thirst,” “Piece by Piece”), mammoth breakdowns (“Don’t Reach for Me,” “Blinding Faith,” “The Calm That Keeps You Awake”), and their novelty pieces of guest vocalists add a refreshing change of pace to what could have been a monotonous meltdown. Alongside Garris’ unmistakable vocals, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon lend guttural roars and hardcore fry vocals respectively, injecting a jolt of white-hot energy to songs like “Thirst” and “Don’t Reach for Me.” While Knocked Loose theoretically approaches You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To with a traditional beatdown template a la Gideon and Bulldoze, its brutality and intensity are felt through every movement.
You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To features a skull-crushing breed of hardcore, but nuance is added when Knocked Loose embraces the haunting – a hum cutting through the relentless storm. Utilizing eerie leads and instrumental stillness, evocative lyrics of homesickness, desolation, and meaninglessness are enacted with musical allegory. Tracks that utilize this more contemplative aura (“Moss Covers All,” its sequel “Take Me Home,” “Sit & Mourn”) reflect the solemnity of their titles and the eeriness of the album art in a pummeling yet haunting approach reminiscent of last year’s The Acacia Strain, reflecting a deeper and more tragic intention beyond the mindless hardcore beatdowns. Buried beneath the blastbeats and frantic vocals lies an existential weight tied to its lyrics, the recurring theme of unearthing roots and dismantling family patterns is accomplished mightily through these tracks, further bolstered by tasteful samples.3 You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is more than just mindless intensity.
Yes, Knocked Loose is here to kick your teeth in, but it’s not as simple as a senseless hardcore beatdown punishment. You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is a multilayered album, easy to dismiss due to its Octane Radio-friendly novelty in “Suffocate” and “Slaughterhouse 2” or its mind-numbing chugs and breakdowns strewn with reckless abandon, but it incorporates just enough haunting experimentation and heartfelt lyricism to give purpose to the punishment. Undoubtedly a divisive release this year, but Knocked Loose balances blind aggression and thoughtful flourishes like a steel-toed boot to the throat in a dense forest at night. So watch your back.
Tracks to Check Out: ”Suffocate,” “Take Me Home,” “Blinding Faith,” and “Sit & Mourn.”
