  1. No art projects this week, but I did make a new video. The topic of this one is new laws targeting 3D printing manufacturers in an effort to prevent the proliferation of ghost guns.

If you give it a watch, please hit the like button. That's a free, easy way to help a small creator in a big way. Thank you.

  2. Another clueless tech law from somebody that apparently doesn't know crap about tech. 3D printers at the low end are dumb, low-tech gadgets easily made from common parts, available software, and lacking even the most basic intelligence that could broadly recognize a gun or gun part.

  3. 3D Printing Industry: Platform Tightens Controls Amid Regulatory Pressure Over 3D Printed Firearm Files. “Thingiverse, a major platform for digital design sharing, is increasing its efforts to restrict access to 3D printed firearm blueprints following a New York investigation that uncovered a significant number of downloadable weapon design files on the site. In response, the company has […]

  4. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, #Firearms & Explosives [#ATF] would take a big hit under #Trump’s #budget, losing $468M. Declaring the agency had “criminalized law-abiding gun ownership through regulatory fiat,” the White House said it would end “excessive restrictions on homemade firearms,” presumably a reference to #GhostGuns [restrictions to which #SCOTUS upheld].

"The Biden administration said in 2022 that the same rules governing fully assembled weapons must also apply to ghost-gun kits.

Manufacturers and owners sued, arguing that the kits do not meet the legal definition of a 'weapon.'

The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 opinion written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, rejected that argument and upheld the Biden administration's regulations.

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented.

Between the lines: Gun regulations usually lose at the Supreme Court, but it's important to note that this case did not raise any Second Amendment questions.

It hinged instead on the interpretation of specific phrases, including 'weapon,' in federal law."

  6. 3D-printed #guns, like the one allegedly used to kill #UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, are a growing threat in the US and around the world. A tech management professor on why they’re likely to be used in even more criminal activities: theconversation.com/3d-printed

  7. Who knew? Turns out #ghostdrones are a thing.

With a blooming third-party marketplace for all the relative bits and bobs you could imagine – and even the almost now ubiquitous #3Dprintable body parts – just like #ghostguns, save for the wellspring of hand-me-down-cum- #opensource software for rfcoms and motor control also freely available…

    Should have guessed.

"More than a decade after the advent of the 3D-printed gun as an icon of libertarianism and a gun control nightmare, police say one of those homemade plastic weapons has now been found in the hands of perhaps the world’s most high-profile alleged killer. For the community of DIY gunsmiths who have spent years honing those printable firearm models, in fact, the handgun police claim Luigi Mangione used to fatally shoot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is as recognizable as the now-famous alleged shooter himself—and shows just how practical and lethal those weapons have become."

  9. #GhostGuns, which have been used in a growing number of #crimes over the past decade, are typically assembled at home using parts, kits or pieces printed by #3Dprinters. Manufacturers say they don’t have to comply w/ #regulations on other #guns sold commercially because ghost guns don’t meet the #legal definition of a “firearm” under the nation’s main #GunControl #law & are marketed for hobbyists.
#ChiefJustice #JohnRoberts expressed incredulity at that, given how easy they are to assemble.

  10. #SCOTUS seems poised to uphold a major #GunRegulation imposed by the #Biden admin that requires #BackgroundChecks, #SerialNumbers & sales #records for the nearly untraceable #firearms known as #GhostGuns.

A majority of the justices seemed skeptical during oral argument on Tues of the position taken by gun owners, parts makers & #2A groups: that the govt exceeded its authority in 2022 when it imposed new rules for the weapons.
