  1. "Behind the Curtain at the Ballet," Henri Gervex, c. 1890.

Gervex (1852-1929) was a lesser-known Impressionist who achieved some notoriety early in his career; his debut painting, "Rolla", a depiction of a nude woman in bed as her lover is getting up and getting dressed...obviously, she's in postcoital bliss...was banned from the Salon de Paris for immorality. It was later exhibited privately to great success.

He seems to have had a rather louche life, what with affairs with assorted courtesans, inspiring characters in Emile Zola novels, and producing some eyebrow-raising nudes. And yet his art, mostly depictions of contemporary life, is perfectly lovely, but gets little attention in surveys of Impressionist art.

    From a private collection.
