"Europe’s largest economy shuttered its last reactors two years ago in what was meant to be an irreversible exit from atomic energy. But surging energy prices and electricity demand are driving calls to revive Germany’s nuclear power industry.
"As the victorious Christian Democratic Union (#CDU) and its sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union, wrote in their party manifesto, 'We are resolved to stick with the nuclear energy option, counting on research on nuclear energy in its 4th and 5th generation, small modular reactors, and fusion reactors. We are assessing the resumption of operation of the recently-shut-down nuclear power plants.'"

A guy from the Czech Republic on LBC just made a brilliant point. Eastern Europe was for 40 years isolated behind the Iron Curtain. During that time, they had pretty much zero immigration. They are therefore a long way behind the rest of Europe in terms of multi-culturalism. That could explain the increased support for the AfD party in the former East Germany.

Well, looks like German democracy will survive for another round.
#Merz will most likely seek a coalition with the #SPD . While I personally don't trust the man at all, he is no Trump - he has neither the power nor the charisma to purge the #CDU (let alone the #CSU ) of moderates and lead them into a coalition with the #AfD . We have been in Black-Red coalitions under Merkel before, and while none of them were great, we survived them (though Merz is definitely crueler than Merkel ever was).
The fact that the #FDP was kicked out parliament was very satisfying to me. They _could_ have been a party of personal liberty, which is a valid , positive approach to politics. Instead, their main "accomplishment" these last few years was opposing and sabotaging the very government they were a part of. Goodbye, #Lindner - you will not be missed.
Props to the #Linke for their stunning reversal. They were the only party actually renewing themselves for this election, and it paid off. Furthermore, though it pains me to say it as a member of the #Grünen , neither the Grünen nor the #SPD have done credible leftist politics these past few years, so it's good that _one_ party did and was very successful with it.
It also helped that the most toxic elements and #Putin bootlickers in the Linke jumped ship to the #BSW - which narrowly failed to enter parliament, which is something that deserves some gloating. Not a great investment now, eh Putin? I hope that #Wagenknecht - like Lindner - ends up on the trash heap of history.
The big question is how the SPD will develop. The party desperately needs a renewal - #Scholz was an atrocious leader in more ways than one. Yet spending the next few years as a junior partner to Merz is not a great position to reinvent yourself as a social democratic force...

Also, "splitting the ticket" is simply not a problem in countries with proportional representation. Parties can simply form a coalition after the election. That is the norm, as one party getting a majority of votes is EXTREMELY rare.

The first exit polls for the German federal elections are in. They... suck, but they could have been even worse:
CDU - CSU - 29%
AFD - 19.5%
SPD - 16%
Greens - 13.5%
Die Linke - 8.5%
FDP - 4.9%
BSW - 4.7%- As expected, the fascist #AfD has become the second biggest political party, but at least they haven't reached the 20% they had been polling in all the opinion polls so far.
- If the exist polls remain true, the #FDP has barely missed reaching the 5% threshold for re-entering parliament. Since their "accomplishments" in the last three years largely consisted in sabotaging the work of the coalition government they were a part of, and they have turned from being a party of personal liberty advocated to a party of crypto-fascists #ElonMusk fans, this is no great loss (sorry #Lindner , but Elon Musk will always love those more who are blatant about their fascism!)
- The #BSW will also fail to enter parliament. Since they are basically Putin's stooges intended to channel votes away from leftist democratic parties, this is no great loss.
- After having been predicted to drop out of parliament due to the rise of the BSW, the #Linke has managed to pull of a stunning reversal and gained 8.5% of the vote. I may not agree with all of their position, but German politics desperately needs a party that stands for clear leftist policies - something that both the #SPD and the #Grünen have failed at in recent years.
It looks the most viable option will be a coalition led by the #CDU with the #SPD as a junior partner. We've already had those under #Merkel , and they were long years of stagnation - but a chancellor #Merz will have fewer principles than Merkel had, and far more cruelty. He is a #Blackrock creature through and through. And while he has made some noises that indicate that he largely recognizes Trump for what he is, I suspect that in the end he will do what the oligarchy wants of him.
Hopefully the oligarchy doesn't want him to form a coalition with the AfD, but we shall see... 😞
