  6. From @joannechocolat

Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips (1866-1948) was an American game designer, #inventor, feminist, and writer. She invented The Landlord's Game, the direct precursor to #Monopoly, although she was never credited for this during her lifetime.

    . .. ...

Personal note: she said “the object of the game is not only to afford amusement to the players, but to illustrate to them how under the present or prevailing system of land tenure, the landlord has an advantage over other enterprises and also how the single tax would discourage land speculation.”

She was a proponent of #Georgism, a single tax movement widely popularized by charismatic politician Henry George through his first book, Progress and Poverty - an economic ideology that government should be funded by a tax on land rent (wealthy landlords) & not by taxes on labour.

He might have been on to something! 🧐 Can we have this now? Please? 🙏

  11. @benlockwood The environmental movement is just a negative application of the labor movements principle that workers ought to get the fruits of their labor. Nature isn’t the fruits of anyone’s labor, but everyone has an equal claim to it including future generations. #HenryGeorge had the right idea.

Why do I keep saying that landowners are the ones that should pay higher taxes?

It's because it doesn't make sense to me that land ownership should be respected for "not paying into the system".

Like, if you want to play this silly game that little boys play of territorialism in elementary school playgrounds, where they draw imaginary boundaries, then by all means do so.

But for people who didn't consent to it, you gotta have a good reason why the respect for imaginary boundaries should be enforced.

To make it really easy: don't tax improvements; just land ownership.

The Reddit comments regarding the following post are calling out how it is absolutely fair that BC assessment has reclassified Big Bang Cider's land use as "light industrial", but I don't think land use should be taxed more.

Just land occupation should be taxed, and nothing else.

(Of course, I'm probably the "anti-tax (except land)" equivalent of marxists: I'm probably missing nuance.)

Cities covering the cost of social services is being labeled as “bad news.”

That label is doing a lot of ideological work.

In reality, this may be the beginning of a long-overdue shift: moving the cost of running a city away from workers, and toward those who own the land.

This shift is good news, not bad news!

I’m aware of these issues, but at a bare minimum people’s time is limited. Even if all other resources are abundant, that fundamental scarcity is still there.

Keeping production within ecological limits is entirely solved with #Georgism’s common ownership of land and natural resources.

Note that growth, once it accounts for social costs such as ecological considerations, is good. There are ways to make it take that into account. Economic value is based on people’s desires.
