  1. From @joannechocolat

Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips (1866-1948) was an American game designer, #inventor, feminist, and writer. She invented The Landlord's Game, the direct precursor to #Monopoly, although she was never credited for this during her lifetime.

    . .. ...

Personal note: she said “the object of the game is not only to afford amusement to the players, but to illustrate to them how under the present or prevailing system of land tenure, the landlord has an advantage over other enterprises and also how the single tax would discourage land speculation.”

She was a proponent of #Georgism, a single tax movement widely popularized by charismatic politician Henry George through his first book, Progress and Poverty - an economic ideology that government should be funded by a tax on land rent (wealthy landlords) & not by taxes on labour.

He might have been on to something! 🧐 Can we have this now? Please? 🙏

Why do I keep saying that landowners are the ones that should pay higher taxes?

It's because it doesn't make sense to me that land ownership should be respected for "not paying into the system".

Like, if you want to play this silly game that little boys play of territorialism in elementary school playgrounds, where they draw imaginary boundaries, then by all means do so.

But for people who didn't consent to it, you gotta have a good reason why the respect for imaginary boundaries should be enforced.

To make it really easy: don't tax improvements; just land ownership.

The Reddit comments regarding the following post are calling out how it is absolutely fair that BC assessment has reclassified Big Bang Cider's land use as "light industrial", but I don't think land use should be taxed more.

Just land occupation should be taxed, and nothing else.

(Of course, I'm probably the "anti-tax (except land)" equivalent of marxists: I'm probably missing nuance.)

Cities covering the cost of social services is being labeled as “bad news.”

That label is doing a lot of ideological work.

In reality, this may be the beginning of a long-overdue shift: moving the cost of running a city away from workers, and toward those who own the land.

This shift is good news, not bad news!

The labor theory of #AdamSmith doesn’t have to be developed as a theory of value like #Marx did. It can also be developed as a normative theory of property. The labor theory of property, unlike the LTV, is meaningful and coherent. David Ellerman has formalized this ideological road not taken.

Smith was an early critic of landlordism. This line of critique eventually became #Georgism.

I doubt Smith would endorse today’s #capitalism or the views of many modern pro-capitalists.

  22. Looking up the original sale value of my house on the county records site revealed to me that the latest appraisal valued the land at around $30,000. That is almost exactly what my back of the napkin calculations for a 100% Land Value Tax would cost!? Which means by working backwards from what Federal, State, County, and City budgets are I determined a reasonably accurate Land Value? Almost identical to what the county appraises it as?

This isn’t hard? We could do this.

    #georgism #lvt

  23. @captainrob @scottsantens Taxing 100% of land value and using it to fund the UBI would fix this. #LVT cannot be passed on to tenants due to land's inelastic supply. This policy essentially makes land collectively-owned, so moves us in a #postcapitalist direction.

  24. If bitcoin's rise is bad for the #environment,

And #moneyPrinting is causing #bitcoin to rise,

Then maybe we need to stop the #moneyPrinter to save the environment? Or maybe bitcoin is using the #energy that it needs to secure the base layer, the foundation of a #newEconomy that respects #LimitsToGrowth.

The #extremelyWealthy #onePercenters love that we are distracted from #HenryGeorge-style #taxation. Until its adopted the #elite will continue to continue with #taxEvasion via #financialEngineering. Its too easy to claim losses to #shellCorporations and mates.

See also #Georgism, or 18th century book, #ProgressAndPoverty.

Quick question: Does NZ non-organic #bread and other confections also have #soyFlour (as they do in #Australia)?
