I’ve just finished the best known novel of George Bernanos, his 1936 “Diary of a Country Priest” (Journal d'un curé de campagne).

A young priest keeps a journal of his ministry in a rural parish in northern France. Bernanos depicts a small town poisoned by the resentments of small storekeepers, the lies and cruelties of a family of the petty nobility, and the spiteful rumours that seep through the population at large. This aspect of the novel draws on the French realist tradition, but two other dimensions of the “Diary” distance the the work from the lineage of Balzac, Flaubert , and Zola. Lengthy monologues, reflecting on God, faith, good, and evil show Bernanos as a 20th century successor to Pascal, adding to the literature of spiritual self scrutiny. In addition, the themes of these monologues and the overall development of the young priest’s religious life place the novel alongside if not necessarily within a philosophical and literary movement germinating in France between the wars, that of existentialism, whether atheist, as with Sartre, or Christian, as with Gabriel Marcel.

Some readers will find these passages hard going. Yet they should persevere, as Bernanos uses striking symbolism and gripping narrative to knit his religious themes to the embittered hopelessness of so many of the inhabitants of the town and its mud clogged environs. Ennui, the young curé notes in the opening pages of his journal, is consuming his parish like cancer; he does not yet know that a cancer of the stomach is consuming him. As his sickness worsens, the young priest comes to subsist on a quasi- eucharistic diet of bread dipped in wine; the parish labels him as a wine bibbing drunkard. Suspense grows as the reader wonders if and how the peasant priest can help the countess find release from the despair occasioned by her daughter’s unfilial resentment, her husband’s continual infidelities, and her son’s untimely death; shortly after she informs the priest that she has found peace, she dies. Malicious gossip represents the episode as the psychological pressure unwittingly exerted by an over earnest and socially maladroit cleric driving the aging aristocrat to her death.

Those who are not religious might be wondering at this point if Bernanos can speak to them. I am an atheist and did not grow up in the Roman Catholic culture that informs the novel, yet still found myself gripped by the writing. As with so much literature, one must read ready to entertain fictions rather than determined to debate facts.
