  1. "The Race Is On" is a song written by Don Rollins (not to be confused with the Don Rollins who co-wrote "#ItsFiveOClockSomewhere" for Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett) and made a hit on the #countryMusic charts by #GeorgeJones and on the #pop and #easyListeningCharts by the unrelated #JackJones. George Jones's version was the first single released from his 1965 album of the same name. Released as a single in September 1964.

  3. Huge thanks to whoever gave me this link to when Curt and Cris from the Meat Puppets played acoustic songs on Tempe, Arizona radio station KUKQ in 1990 (so young - only a band for about 10 years at this point, but still, preparing to play with Peter Murphy).

They do a few songs with a mini interview - the first song is an instrumental version of a song they'd later record with lyrics, 'That's How It Goes' that Curt had JUST written, it didn't even have a title at that point- and he plays it on a 12 string he wasn't even familiar with. Just fuckin awesome. Then they do 'Plateau', 'One of These Days', 'If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time' (the interview) and 'Candy Hearts', a George Jones cover. And the host Jonathan mentions a Smithereens CD at the end! Epic.

  4. "Running Bear" is a #teenageTragedySong written by Jiles Perry Richardson (a.k.a. #theBigBopper) and sung most famously by #JohnnyPreston in 1959. The 1959 recording featured background vocals by #GeorgeJones and the session's producer Bill Hall, who provided the "#Indian #chanting" of "uga-uga" during the three verses, as well as the "Indian war cries" at the start and end of the record.

  6. Cover I did a few years ago of an old George Jones/Gene Pitney country tune, by way of Gram and Emmylou. Video features our dear, departed dog and more of the weird faces I make when I sing.

Legit licensed cover available on my Faircamp!
