  1. "Growing up, most “#Jewish #music” classes I encountered were basically a teacher standing at the front of the room saying, “#BobDylan is Jewish,” then playing a Bob Dylan song. Then: “#CaroleKing is Jewish,” followed by a Carole King song. And so on for 45 minutes. People always seemed to enjoy it, but I’d leave wondering: OK, this person happened to be Jewish — but what’s Jewish about the art?

So, I started asking people: What is #Jewishmusic?

I heard every possible answer. Anything in #Hebrew. Anything from #Israel. Music based on the #Torah. #GeorgeGershwin. #LeonardCohen. A #Jew playing music.

Each answer contained some truth, but none felt complete."

Fantastic collection of Sarah Vaughan doing Gershwin standards from the twenties and thirties, supported by Hal Mooney & His Orchestra.

My copy—via a private sale—is a 2xLP gatefold reissue in mono by Verve/UMe, which reproduces the old Mercury labels.

  7. this has been one of my favorite lee perry productions for many decades, but it was only this month that i realized it's a remix of Gershwin's "Summertime"! they even go to the bridge at the end. sometimes it takes a while for obvious connections to be perceived! what a great vocal performance by Errol Walker and what an amazing mix by Lee Perry. In some ways, the lyrics are better than the original!

21. Ad for the Fred Astaire RKO musical “Damsel in Distress” (1937), Screenland, Jan. 1938.

This was Astaire’s first starting vehicle separate from Ginger Rogers. Burns and Allen are his co-stars. Early career Joan Fontaine is the love interest, but only gets a mention as a generic “Hollywood’s Girl of Your Dreams”

Immortal music by George Gershwin in one of his last works before his early death in mid-1937.
