"Growing up, most “#Jewish #music” classes I encountered were basically a teacher standing at the front of the room saying, “#BobDylan is Jewish,” then playing a Bob Dylan song. Then: “#CaroleKing is Jewish,” followed by a Carole King song. And so on for 45 minutes. People always seemed to enjoy it, but I’d leave wondering: OK, this person happened to be Jewish — but what’s Jewish about the art?

So, I started asking people: What is #Jewishmusic?

I heard every possible answer. Anything in #Hebrew. Anything from #Israel. Music based on the #Torah. #GeorgeGershwin. #LeonardCohen. A #Jew playing music.

Each answer contained some truth, but none felt complete."

On the 12th of February 1924: #GeorgeGershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" premieres at the influential concert "Experiment in Modern Music" held by Paul Whiteman and his orchestra at Aeolian Hall, NYC.

this has been one of my favorite lee perry productions for many decades, but it was only this month that i realized it's a remix of Gershwin's "Summertime"! they even go to the bridge at the end. sometimes it takes a while for obvious connections to be perceived! what a great vocal performance by Errol Walker and what an amazing mix by Lee Perry. In some ways, the lyrics are better than the original!
