Foods from My Geographic Area that I don’t Like

Black Pudding
This is called blood sausage in other parts of the world (gee, I wonder why they changed the name…). Anyway, the idea of this food makes me want to heave, and the sight of it can really turn my stomach.

Steak and Kidney Anything
Steak and kidney comes in all sorts of forms, from pies to casseroles.
The sound of this food is very off-putting to me, and it’s not just because I don’t eat meat (though that’s part of it). There’s just something about the way it looks that simply isn’t appetising.

Winkles
Winkles, or periwinkles, are literally sea snails that some people from my area like ot eat. They are caught during low tide, cooked and eaten with a pin. Snails. SNAILS? No thank you. I can remember my grandparents taking me to the beach when I was maybe four and trying to get me to eat them. I cried.

Anyhoo… I wonder what you’re all going to pick as your least favourite foods from your geographic area.

Foods from my Geographic Area that I Love

I can only think of a few Geordie foods off the top of my head (Geordies are people from Newcastle in the northeast of England and the surrounding areas):

Saveloy Dip
One thing I used to love, before I became a vegetarian in my teens, was a saveloy dip, which is a smoked sausage (a saveloy) in a floury bun, dipped in gravy, served with pease pudding, stuffing, and mustard.

Panackelty
My Nanna used to make Panackelty (pan-ack-elty) when I was growing up. It’s a northern English casserole-type dish. It’s slow-cooked and usually made by layering sliced potatoes, onions, and leftover meat—often corned beef, bacon, or pork—and baking it in beef stock until tender (or the vegetarian equivalent).

Pease Pudding
Pease pudding is a traditional British (more north-eastern) savoury porridge or paste made from boiled yellow split peas, spices, and often ham stock. It has a thick, creamy texture similar to hummus, is bright yellow, and is often served hot or cold, alongside boiled bacon or gammon, or in sandwiches. This was a staple in our house. My Nanna never had a family gathering without it (that, and tinned salmon, which she thought was posh—yuck).

More broadly, British foods are:
Fish and chips, which we often had as a treat growing up, and shepherd’s pie (or cottage pie if you’re a vegetarian like me).

We also had regular Sunday roasts—beef or chicken—served with a plate of cooked vegetables, and lashings of gravy and Yorkshire puddings. Sometimes, we’d swap out the meat for toad in the hole… which has nothing to do with toads… we’re British, we’re not that experimental. Toad in the hole is a large Yorkshire pudding with sausages baked into it.

I've loved Mark Knopfler since that late 70s night when a friend & I were mesmerized by a song we heard on his car radio: it was "Sultans of Swing" (Dire Straits)!

Nothing tops that first mind-blowing experience, but only it makes me doubt that "Why Aye Man" is Knopfler's best song.

It's the most elegant critique of Thatcherism I've heard, & beautiful to boot!

Every time I purchase something in the UK they try and convince me to download a loyalty scheme app. Of course non of these apps are in the Dutch App Store but if I tell them I don’t live in the UK they’ll quiz me about my life for 5 minutes.
