  1. Thin Remains (2022)

The “walls” featured here are the remains of a hardened magma-filled fracture called a dike. This dike formed underground when minette magma rose through cracks associated with the Shiprock volcanic system about 30 million years ago. Later, erosion stripped away the softer surrounding sedimentary rocks, leaving the dike standing as a narrow wall and the main volcanic conduit standing as Tsé Bitʼaʼí (Shiprock Pinnacle).

  6. Abert Rim

    Abert Rim Sunrise
Abert Rim is a spectacular geological feature in Oregon, where a huge block of basalt rock rises more than 2,000 feet above the valley floor. It is the result of ancient volcanic eruptions and faulting that tilted the land. Abert Rim is home to bighorn sheep, raptors, and other wildlife. It is also a popular spot for paragliding and hang gliding, as the cliffs create strong thermals.
