Les Romains faisaient-ils pipi dans la piscine ? C’est ce que suggère une récente étude (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2517276122, en accès payant malheureusement) ! Une équipe a analysé les isotopes du carbone et de l’oxygène dans des dépôts du système d’alimentation en eau de Pompéi (puits, citernes, bains, aqueduc…). Pour expliquer les données mesurées dans les thermes républicains, les scientifiques invoquent « l’introduction de carbone organique provenant de l’activité microbienne et de résidus humains (par exemple sueur, sébum, urine, huile de bain) ».
 Plus sérieusement, au-delà de cet aspect qui vaut un petit succès médiatique à l’étude depuis quelques jours, ce travail met en évidence une transition dans l’alimentation en eau de Pompéi. La ville est ainsi passée d’une eau sourdant de roches volcaniques, avec des taux en minéraux pas très sympas pour la santé, à une eau issue de sources karstiques et transportée par aqueduc, beaucoup plus pure – quoique contaminée par le plomb des canalisations… L’outil isotopique démontre ainsi toute sa puissance pour reconstituer les conditions de vie du passé. Pensez-y la prochaine fois que vous détartrez la salle de bain : vos dépôts calcaires feront peut-être le bonheur des archéologues et géochimistes du futur !
