My university uses #Geoblocking of known evil countries.

#Geoblocking is a very sensible and appropriate security measure, as it ensures that

only those with evil and hostile intentions get to your sites -
because for those, geoblocking is easy to circumvent -

while all normal naive believers in global connectivity - such as scientists, academics, students - are left out.

I commend the use of #geoblock

In a couple of weeks #BBC will #geoblock access to its #BBCSounds app outside the UK. Fair enough I guess. The wife and I use it a lot. I already use get_iplayer and RSS feeds to download programmes and Podcasts I want. But my wife wants to continue listening-back to earlier shows on her iPhone in the car.

I was poking around to see what the scuttlebutt was regarding the odds on the Stanley Cup game 7.

The site is in Edomonton, Canada, I am in US.

In the link below, there was an embedded ad.

What I saw was the ad was GEO-blocked for me.

Anyway, I am picking the Oilers because the pressure is on the Panthers to not choke after having a 3-0 lead in the Best of 7 series.

l’idea di base e’ che i diritti tv , per esempio per gli eventi sportivi, che peraltro nemmeno comprano piu’, vengono venduti su base ‘nazionale’.

Ma l’essere italiano, nel ventunesimo secolo, non vuol dire essere in Italia. Io ho un account su raiplay, potrei benissimo pagarci il canone se richiesto.

Anzi io PAGO il canone, immagino che sia embedded nella bolletta della luce di casa mia in montagna

Il mercato europeo dovrebbe prevedere questi casi

Had my first run in with a #geoblock on #Netflix today. Five season into a series after some months of watching, today it was suddenly gone from my list and not possible to find with search.

Excuse me, but, how can this be considered acceptable in any way, shape or form? Now, I whipped out my VPN and got the content right back to me, but most people do not have the knowledge (or will to learn) to do this.

#Paywalled/Adwalled links are surprisingly common in the #Fediverse.

Content that's not accessible without conditions is not part of the open web.

How should we deal with this? A bot that replies with an unblocked link? cw?
