  1. Hey fedizens :FediverseSymbol:

We had a bit of a mare yesterday, as wife's brand new laptop (an Acer Aspire A16-61M (NX.JP0EK.005)), which she got as a gift from family during recent sales, decided to suddenly crash in an awful manner after only a month of usage.

The laptop crashed in Windows (Win 11 Home, 25H2 with all AI tools removed) with an error message of some kind, rebooted, and then reported "no bootable device".

We spent a huge chunk of the day researching the issue, trying various supposed fixes, and failing miserably

Our failure led to us having a neurospicy meltdown in the evening 😔 As such, we're asking for your advice on attempting to fix it ASAP for wife

Wife has raised a ticket with Acer in case they're able to help, but we're hoping folks here will suggest something other than wiping the drive and reinstalling an OS.

    Things we tried included:

    • Verifying that the SSD itself still showed in the UEFI/BIOS.
    • Resetting the UEFI to default.
      • We cannot change to the boot mode to Legacy then back to UEFI, as some generic-advice-giving folks have suggested in Acer forums and elsewhere.
    • Using Windows PE to access the command line tools, as well as variants based on it, like:
      • Aomei Partition Assistant's bootable media.
      • Hiren's BootCD PE x64 (v1.0.8).
    • Using Windows 11 installation media (from their latest media creation tool) to access the troubleshooting repair tools.

The efforts thus far have only changed the error from not "no bootable device" to immediate blue screen messages showing a failure a load and presenting options (function key options like startup repair etc.) which all fail to work.

The main C: partition appears to be borked, and shows as unallocated.

We've tried to recover the partitions and the data, as well as clone the drive sector by sector, without success. As far as we know, Bitlocker hadn't been enabled, but one attempt to recover files under a tool within Hiren's BootCD PE asked for a pin when trying to recover files from the lost partition showing as unallocated space, so it may well be hindering any recovery efforts.

Due to life struggles, neither wife nor us had had the time to set up any backup services yet, and whilst most things are cloud saved and can be recovered, some files and all the custom settings and tools would be lost if we cannot recover the drive fully 😔

Apologies in advance if we advise we've tried something already, and please be kind and detailed with any comments or queries.

For context, we've 20+ years of troubleshooting Windows and hardware issues, but we're neither a programmer nor IT specialist of any kind, and have never had an IT-type job.

Any thoughtful ideas, suggestions, and recommendations will be most welcome 🩷

Update: After further troubleshooting, the issue appears to be that some crash broke the drive's partition table, and software couldn't recover all the partitions because BitLocker was enabled by default 🤦‍♀️ Fortunately wife was using her Microsoft account and the recovery key auto-synced to her account. Now just trying to find a bit of software other than DiskGenius (which is bleeping expensive) which can accept the BitLocker recovery key and rebuild the drive without having to back it up and restore it.

Further update: After a few days of working on this whenever we could around other things, and learning more about WindowsPE, WindowsRE, device encryption being enabled by default, bcdedit, manage-bcd, repair-bcd, bcdboot, various shite recovery tools that everybody claims are great but aren't at all, we finally ended up getting the device back into a semi-working state and told it to hold off on updates for the next 20 years. In the meantime, wife can use laptop again at least and we can fix the many other bugs again manually, via an in-place install, or properly backing up, nuking everything, and starting from scratch. On the plus side, we discovered that Rufus (the formatting tool) has options to download and customise Windows installations, including automatic disabling device encryption. Also had to play around a little with Linux Mint. We could get used to that, but we'd to find equivalents for WIndows mods and functions we're used to. Oh, and having to decrypt an encrypted unallocated (raw) partition, even where you have the recovery key, is one of the most cursed problems we've ever come across! Windows will allow you to assign a drive letter without formatting, but you can only decrypt it to elsewhere then: not in-place. Most recovery tools simply lack the simple ability to let you enter a recovery key or password and restore it in place.

  5. Hey all :FediverseSymbol:

    We had another linguistic thought.

(You can see our previous linguistic queries on looking for words for the pain of being misunderstood and finding an alternative word for hope.)

We realised that English has a specific word for the inability to experience pleasure from activities you'd usually enjoy: anhedonia.

However, it doesn't seem like there's an equivalent official word for the inability to experience hope.

Instead, there are only words like hopeless or hopelessness, but those words do not really suggest that the person can no longer derive hope from situations they'd normally expect to.

Following the same logic as the above, we think it would be something like an- plus either elpĭ́s or elpída.

So, we think it'd be either anelpis or anelpida.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Corrections?

  6. CW: Query for people with any kind of neuropathic pain re: meds and treatment

    Hey folks :FediverseSymbol:

This is a query targeted at any folks who experience any kind of neuropathic pain for any reason(s), to any degree, and with any frequency, and who've found meds and/or treatment options to reduce, manage, or otherwise cope with the pain.

Please note that we're not asking for ourselves, but for friends who have various forms of this and seem to be having no luck getting decent or timely care through official medical routes 🥺😔

Our own experience of pain has been very different, so we cannot extrapolate anything that has worked for our own issues to neuropathic pain. Relatively-speaking, we've been very fortunate.

We are aware of what the medical organisations say, but we'd much rather hear from folks with personal experiences of any kind, particularly atypical ones that work where others have failed.

As we understand it, commonly-prescribed meds like duloxetine (or any similar SNRI) and gabapentin are often ineffective in many folks, though please correct us if we're wrong there.

We don't have any insight on things like:

Thank you in advance for any answers 🫶 :DisabilityPrideButterfly:

  11. Hey fedizens :FediverseSymbol:

Anybody know a decent, modern replacement for Tag&Rename?

It used to be our favourite tag editor, but development seemingly stopped back in 2018.

We're ideally looking for something that's:

    • Cross-platform (at least Windows and Linux).
    • Has a user-friendly UI.

    It must:

    • Have a dark mode option.
    • Be compatible with modern tags, particularly lyrics ones, which we're apparently way out of date on 😅
      • We think the newer Vorbis tag is UNSYNCEDLYRICS, based on some downloaded FLAC files, versus the older LYRICS tag we're used to.

For context, we primarily use WACUP on desktop or Poweramp on Android.

Not sure if it's a thing, but if there's some kind of new option for synced lyrics that's compatible with both of the above, that would be amazing!

  12. Hey fedizens :FediverseSymbol:

Anybody know a trusted script¹ or extention² to automatically replace "smart" (aka "curly") quotation marks and apostrophes with straight ones?

    • Double quotation marks -- replacing “ and ” with ".
    • Single quotation marks -- replacing ‘ and ’ with '.
    • Apostrophe - replacing ’ with '.

Genuinely asking, but no reply guys please 🫶

    Thanks 🩷

    #AskFedi #punctuation #PunctuationMarks #QuotationMarks #apostrophe #GenuinelyAsking #NoReplyGuys

Edit: Apologies for any confusion caused. We're looking only for something basic and trusted that can replace certain characters or text strings with another. So long as we can easily configure it to replace the above, it doesn't matter if it's a more-general script or extension for replacing text.

Edit 2: We found an extention that could automagically do it for us. It's called FoxReplace. Took us a few moments to work out how it worked, but we ended up creating a rule for text only (ignoring URLs) to apply the desired substitutions automatically to the text output on any rendered web page on a page load/reload.

    ¹ Compatible with violentmonkey.
² Compatible with Firefox or Firefox-based browsers.

  13. We've been thinking more about voice training.

    • We don't find it fun: it's a painful chore.
    • We can't do it if being perceived in person.
    • We find the exercises too much like singing lessons (which are triggering) and very cringe.
    • We cannot stick to a regular training regimen, particularly where we cannot guarantee sufficient uninterrupted time and space alone.

We do, however, like poorly attempting other accents (mostly English regional accents) and find it actively fun. (Not by ourselves though.)

Anyone managed to voice train not via daily, boring, abstract exercises, but rather fun voice activities that don't feel embarrassing to do around others and which actually spark joy?

    #VoiceTraining #VoiceFeminisation #VoiceTherapy #SpeechAndLanguageTherapy #trans #transgender #NonBinary #queer #LGBTQ+ #LGBTQIA+ #AskFedi #GenuinelyAsking

    Edit:

    • Fixed some typos and missing thoughts / sentences.
    • Thank you for all answers so far. Sadly none are helpful for us, but they may be helpful to others.
    • We struggle with many things that make voice training much more difficult for us, including the inability to make verbal noise(s) solo within earshot of anyone else where we're not directly communicating with them.
      • Even when we used to stream, it was very difficult for us to do if wife was downstairs in living room, on the same floor as our office, even with the door shut.
  14. Anyone found a good ELI5 and/or tl;dr article that explains what bollocks (e.g., AI bullshit; unwanted features) comes with Windows 11 25H2 and how to disable it? :Windows_11_Logo:

Already checked that StartAllBack added support for it last month, and has since had a further update this month for small bug fixes, but wanted to double-check ahead of time before doing an update before finding out it's breaking stuff 😅

Already checked that StartAllBack added support for it last month, and has since had a further update this month for small bug fixes, but wanted to double-check ahead of time before doing an update before finding out it's breaking stuff 😅

  16. CW: Query for other folks on extended-release ADHD stimulant meds

    Hey lovelies :ADHD_Butterfly:

We started on stimulant meds earlier this year to help with some of our ADHD struggles. We're currently on:

    • 1 x 50 mg lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse®) on waking
      • ~10-14 hours duration of action
    • 1 x 10 mg dexamfetamine (Amfexa®) between 15:00 to 16:00 daily, as a boost
      • ~4-6 hours duration of action

We've heard of some folks taking their meds as a split dose.

In theory, we could ask our GP to prescribe our lisdex dose across 2 capsules, with an aim to taking 1 on waking and 1 at lunch, whilst skipping the dexam booster.

Any personal experiences of doing this? (Only personal testimonials please.)

Not sure if we'd need to go with the same total lisdex dose (30 mg and 20 mg capsules) or request a small dose adjustment as well in line with not taking the dexam (2 x 30 mg capsules).

Thoughts before we reach out to anyone to ask to try about this?

    Bonus question:
Anyone had any luck with getting GP to prescribe something like guanfacine alongside stimulant meds to help with RSD?

  17. CW: Analysis of lyrics to "We All Stand Together" from "Rupert and the Frog Song"; politics and human rights; fascism; fighting battles irrespective of whether you're likely to win them or not; a little dark and bleak

Way back sometime in the latter half of the 1980s, we watched Rupert and the Frog Song on VHS and heard We All Stand Together within it for the very first time.

We still remember how excited our dad was for us to hear the song for the very first time, and how much we enjoyed the music and lyrics 🎶

It wasn't until much later in life that we started to realise just how powerful and defiant some lyrics of the song verses were, whilst others were... noticeably less so.

The first verse begins as follows:

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain, we'll never give in
Side by side, hand in hand
    We all stand together

We don't know what meaning(s) Paul McCartney intended with such lyrics, but to us this isn't just some song about friendship for kids: it's a call to stand, march, and support each other, no matter what happens.

Given Paul's working class background, it's perhaps no surprise that it feels inherently pro-social, pro-worker, and pro-union. It's positive, progressive, and powerful: exactly the kind of message that people need to inspire them to proect.

Given the strength of the first verse, it's perplexing to us how suddenly the tone shifts in the second, which begins:

Play the game, fight the fight

"Play the game" has multiple meanings, but it's likely about conforming to the rules of the establishment. In order to win the game, you have to:

    • obey the rules;
    • be on your best "sporting" behaviour; and
    • not do anything controversial that might lead to a penalty for your side, particularly as that could cost you the entire game.

Beyond this, folks may even need to play the long-game, where you patiently plan, prepare, and outperform your opponents, particularly political ones, in order to achieve your goals.

The lyrics then call for the listener to "fight the fight". This seems likely to be the "good fight", which in the context of the times would likely be the ongoing battle for workers' rights against a government that considered unions and workers to be the enemy.

Okay. So maybe this is a bit grim for a young listener, but given all the obstacles stacked up against the working class, who were often treated like obstinate children themselves, it would make sense that the song encourages caution here. It was a different time. We can understand this, even if we don't fully agree.

What we don't understand is the apparent flippancy of the next line:

But what's the point on a beautiful night?

    What the actual heck, song?!

    Okay, okay, okay.

Maybe we're being too hard on the song here. Perhaps it's remarking that sometimes you need to take a break from the fight every once in a while for yourself to recharge, so you can keep fighting.

However, if this was the intended meaning, it's not been implemented well, in our opinion.

The phrasing "what's the point" makes it sound like the entire purpose of fighting is ultimately meaningless. That's not a positive message for kids: that's what you'd expect from the resignation speech of someone who's burnt themselves out fighting over decades to achieve their goals, only to begin to question why they were even fighting!

And yet, the verse then ends on:

Arm in arm, hand in hand
    We all stand together

Maybe the song had a momentarily loss of hope, but then regained it, and is once again supporting the idea of unity, solidarity, and the strength of the group.

Alternatively, the song never actually recovered from the loss of hope, but is pushing on regardless, as we all need to support each other, even if we never achieve our end goals.

By going "arm in arm" and "hand in hand", it's both a show of group strength and an acknowledgement that everyone within the group needs some form of support from others around them.

    ...

Okay... so… why have we written all this, particularly right now?

There are lots of answers we could give, but for us it ultimately comes down to these points:

    • This song is inherently one of hope, but it could be so much stronger with a little rewording.
    • Times are bleak right now for millions of people and people need a little hope.

We've had ideas ourselves on how we might reword the lyrics, but we're not a song writer. Heck, we're not a good writer writer… as this awful sentence no doubt highlights.

Our ideas are full of anger, rage, and a feeling of inevitable, unavoidable despair for all the people we know we won't be able to help, support, or save 🥺😞

In a way, we're perhaps a bit like the second verse: we expect to keep fighting battles not because we expect to win any of them, but because we need to support those around us regardless.

We honestly want to ask how you would reword the song to strengthen it.

    • What would you change?
    • Why would you make those changes?

Right now, our anger would turn the second verse into:

Fuck their game! Time to fight!
Stop ceding ground to the bigoted right!
Arm in arm; hand in hand
    We must stand together!

Not exactly the most-inspiring version it could be 😅🤦‍♀️

  18. Question for any tech folks who are stuck with Microsoft Office 365 ("Microsoft 365 MSO") for work and use Excel, specifically Version 2408 build 16.0.17928.20512.

Where has the Paste > Transpose option gone? It seems to be MIA.

What's more confusing is that we've got it in Microsoft Excel LTSC Version 2408 Build 16.0.17932.20360.

Option should look something like this, but appears to be disabled or missing in the 365 version listed.

  20. DIY / homebrew HRT query on behalf of a trans gal we know, who lives in Sweden :TransHeart: 🇸🇪

How would someone in Sweden, hypothetically, get progesterone (P4) capsules or cream without a prescription, in light of Sweden's restrictive customs?

It goes without saying that this is necessary as Sweden, like the UK and other countries, has incredibly-poor gender-affirming healthcare for trans people :FaceExhaling:

    Our current thoughts are:

    • Find an EU-based pharmacy that's willing to sell progesterone cream without prescription, so customs don't check it 🇪🇺
    • Get an EU-based friend to forward them on.
    • Import progesterone API (CAS 57-83-0) and make them yourself 💊

    Thoughts?

  21. Hey folks :FediverseSymbol:

Feel a bit dumb for asking them, but our Google-Fu is failing us here on this.

Can anyone confirm whether there is some way to configure a task in Windows 10 (via Task Scheduler) to run a task every N hours daily between 2 times only?

We've got a drive synchronisation task which currently runs every 3 hours. However, we want to change it so that it only runs from 09:00 to 21:00 inclusive.

As far as we can tell, there doesn't seem to be an option possible in Windows 10 for this, but we wanted to double-check before we go creating multiple daily events (i.e., tasks to run once daily at 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, and 21:00).

    Genuinely asking here :PinkHeart:

For example, if we do a search from our instance for #TransMasc, we only see about 13 profiles and a handful of posts, probably due to our server not fully searching across fedi 😞

(FYI, any tech recommendations on additionally relays or ways to solve this search / federation issue on a Glitch-SOC server would be very much welcomed.)

So, please can y'all either reply back for us to follow you, have some recommendations of folk we can follow, or have thoughts on getting around our search / federation issue, we'd be super grateful :PinkHeart:
